Just to clarify, since I have no Chrome devices, will this show up on my iPhone automatically without installing anything extra? It will look just like all of my AirPlay/2 devices? I have a Roku stick and a Roku TV that support Airplay2, but everything else I have is Apple including an AppleTV.

Look for the “cast icon” in the apps. It won’t be an iPhone native button, like the screen mirroring.

My sense is that the subscription fee will relate to the data subscription for the vehicle (which enables hot spotting, nav) as well as casting. The nuance of casting vs. running off native apps is that it also opens window for people to work from their car (and pretty comfortably from an R1 given size) since you can cast the web form of both Office and Google enterprise apps.

As long as RJ prices it competitively with Tesla's data package this seems pretty attractive.

My only ask is a simple ask - be able to cast or run video apps from the rear screen while in motion.

It appears everything they showed in this demo was front screen while parked. How many people are sitting in their car watching the front screen vs. driving with kids in the back who could watch the small screen?

This is yet another weird engineering decision by Rivian to concentrate efforts on fringe features that are not terribly useful while ignoring features that people would actually use on a daily basis.

> 0 fees for CP or AA does not mean 0 financial cost. Unless you have some insider perspective on the inner workings of Rivian's OS, you cannot trivialize the scope and work effort to add third-party software.

You also have to realize that supporting this software from Apple or Google isn't without rules to follow on what you can and cannot do. Apple and Google are not dumb and may "give it away" for free but have a lot of stipulations on what you can do in the fine print.

https://electrek.co/2024/05/15/rivi...-google-cast-video-streaming-r1-infotainment/

American automaker Rivian is upping the entertainment factor for current and future owners of its flagship R1 line of EVs. Today, Rivian shared it is integrating YouTube into its infotainment system, available for streaming on your vehicle’s center display. Additionally, the automaker is adding Google Cast capabilities, giving drivers and passengers the ability to mirror their favorite content in the EV from a smartphone or tablet.

As you’re most certainly aware by now, Rivian ($RIVN) is a relatively young and exciting EV automaker focusing on bringing sustainability and comfort to US customers, whether on public roads or out exploring Mother Nature.

The automaker’s journey to scale its two flagship models, the R1T pickup and R1S SUV,has seen its fair share of bumps, but it appears to have hit its stride at its lone production facilityin Normal, Illinois, as it gears up for not one but three additional all-electric models in its pipeline.

While Rivian customers are some of the most satisfied in the segment, the infotainment of its current models leaves a bit to be desired. Sure, you can download wellness apps like Headspace and Sleepio or manage your company using Workday, but in terms of entertainment, the second half and ultra-popular word in the central display’s portmanteau, Rivian could do better.

Rejoice R1 owners, for your streaming desires have been met! Rivian has added both YouTube and Google Cast, giving drivers (when parked of course) and their passengers two solid options to get their dopamine fix from the comfort of their electric truck.

This morning, Rivian shared that its current R1 infotainment system, consisting of a 15-inch touchscreen and “immersive audio system,” will soon support the YouTube App, enabling owners to stream their favorite cat videos or montages of some of the best Vines (man, I miss that app).

Additionally, Rivian is adding Google Cast capabilities, meaning you will soon be able to project Cast-enabled apps directly from your Apple or Android smartphone or tablet directly to the R1’s center display.

To begin, the EV must be parked for safety. Then, connect any phone or tablet to the vehicle’s WiFi hotspot and tap the Google Cast icon (seen in the featured image above) on your device’s screen. From there, you simply tap “Rivian” on the screen to begin the casting session, which will play your selected app’s video on the vehicle’s screen and across its sound system.

You’ll then be able to control playback directly through the R1’s display while still being able to access other apps from your phone. However, if the vehicle is shifted into Drive mode, the video will pause automatically to ensure driver and passenger safety.

Rivian says the native YouTube App and Google Cast capabilities will come via an over-the-air (OTA) update that is “coming soon,” but we do not have a confirmed date yet. Stay tuned.
so you can watch it when the truck in in PARK...big deal...we could use Waze a lot more than this capability

Yeah, I definitely want Waze so I can be routed down small neighborhood streets with speed bumps instead of staying on the main road that's 5 ft longer.

Buy your kids a tablet. They are more versatile and provide a bigger screen. And they can use them outside the car. Who is really watching media on screens the size of an iphone 4 feet away from their eyes and located at their feet?

I thought everyone was waiting for entertainment options just like this? But now it sounds like a lot are disappointed? I think it’s cool. I won’t use it much but I’d probably use it once a week or so while in my car eating or waiting on someone.
