I don't know why but this bothers me. I took my R1S in for a paint touch up fix. I went to check the gear guard videos after picking it up and there were no new videos. I figured they just deleted the recordings of them, which is suspicious to begin with.

But more annoyingly, a few days later I went to check my videos from a parking lot incident and realized the service center employees had turned off gear guard recording entirely and left it off.

Am I alone in thinking that this is shouldn't be allowed?

I also really still think that feature needs to be passcode protected to prevent vallets from turning it off.

I don't know if Rivian has some sort of "service mode" but if you bring a Tesla in for service, basically all functions on your Tesla app cease to function. That means you can't lock/unlock or view the live cameras. It is probably a liability thing. Do you think people in the service center want cameras/the general public watching them?

Was this done at a Rivian service center or a 3rd party shop? With all the "smart" vehicles out there, I wouldn't be surprised if this is one of the things employees do first thing when a customer car comes in to be worked on. I would.

That’s not just Rivian almost all service centers do that.
Speaking as a long term dash cam owner - 90% of the time they are off/unplugged when returned.

Think of it from their perspective, would you want somebody watching you while you’re working?

This is also a privacy issue. Employees have some reasonable expectation of privacy in their place of employment, seeing as they are not public servants, and their workplace is not public. They may even have a corporate policy that dictates the Cams be disabled.

Yes there is service mode and you can find it in the settings menu.

The first time my vehicle was serviced, they turned it off. After a the last few updates, Rivian added service mode, which automatically turns gear guard off. Maybe the tech didn't know about the service mode update?

Like mentioned above, Rivian is not a public entity and their employees deserve a certain level of privacy. Hell, you see the crap that goes on in this Forum... you want those same guys staring at you while you work all day?

When I used to take my R1T in for service, they would straight up tell me they are going to unplug my dash cam.

If Rivian places the vehicle in "Service Mode" that disables all cams. When you get your vehicle back, if it is still in Service Mode you will see a bright yellow 1/2" high banner all the way across the top of your main display noting the vehicle is in Service Mode and that certain features are unavailable.

The SC turned off gear guard and did not turn it back on every time my car was in service. Rivians do have a service mode like Teslas but it seems like it does not automatically turn off the gear guard.

Eh?

My closest Lexus and Mercedes dealers have a waiting room with a vast glass, spanning almost an entire wall that overlooks right into the service area.
Same with my local America’s Tire locations.

The Costa Mesa SC also has a clear glass door that leads to the service area and they don't care if stand there and stare at what's going on in the shop during business hours. Probably would ask you stop, if you pulled out a tri-pod with camera and started to record while standing there. I'm sure most service techs don't care either way, but since the general public doesn't have a "right" to be able to view their camera inside a privately owned business, why not just turn it off out of habit.

You ever try flexing your rights to stand in and view a congress member in their "publically" funded office... probably not, because it will never happen.

And, why would the general public have access to someone’s recording from a private vehicle?

I understand what you’re trying to think, but it doesn’t add up.

In many places, recording in such an environment is only legally allowed with consent.

I'm fully onboard with a service mode where they're free to mess with whatever setting, but I want all the settings back to where I had them when I pick it up.
