they are estimating 240-250 miles of range, disappointing considering this will likely be in the 200k range.

This new EV G Wagon is going to be very pricey and a significant status symbol for those into such things. Like the ICE G Wagons, most will never get dirt between their toes. I am sure that you can have both an R1T and an R1S for less than a single EV G Wagon. To each their own.

I took a quick look at G-Class resale values and they hold up surprisingly well compared to other high end German cars. If they dropped in price like a used amg, it might be worth picking up off lease but who wants to drive a six figure pavement princess offroad?

Almost all G Wagons are purchased and not leased. They hold the value as production is low and the export market is huge for them. Also one of the only hand build MB that is not an AMG. I owned a 2001 G500 and it is one of my favorite cars I ever owned. New it was $80k put 155k miles on it until someone hit me and it was totaled. payout after over 10 years of ownership was $40k.

That is a generous estimate. Top Gear reported 460km range. That is about 285 miles and remember that is probably the WLTP cycle. EPA range is multiple that number by .7 and get 200 max range at 100% charge. Which would bring real world range to 150-175 which is utterly pathetic.

I loved the 1980s Steyr-Daimler-Puch G-Wagons - not so much the tarted up imports. I used to run into a guy at the park fishing every morning who drove a G500. Cowl leaks let water accumulate on a shelf under the dash, accelerate and the water sloshed and shorted out the electronics. First time was handled under warranty - second time and they said no and I think it was $10k to remediate. Pass for me.

Maybe.. but the Germans have been over delivering on highway miles and EPA estimates. They went over on the iX and the EQS on highway miles. So I think it’ll be the 240-250 range realistic for the 580 model and the amg will likely drop down further.

I think the German's are coming to grips with EVs. I drove a BMX iX and it was pretty sweet, but butt ugly. Problem I see is China and technology is putting pressure on the EV market for cheaper cars. This is going to drive prices down on main stream cars (not so much Rivian). If I bought a BMX iX I would lease it for two years and put the least amount down; I can see it depreciating 20-30% a year.. That is a huge hit on 95-115K vehicle. The BMX salesman indicated they are steep discounts now on the BMW iX.
