2024 R1S Dual Motor Large Battery 21"
Hi all,

Thought I'd share our recent trip to test out:
  1. Charging with a TT-30 / 14-50 adapter
  2. Using power from the R1S for cooking
  3. Taking our cat on a short trip
Happy to say that all went very well!

Some details first:
  • 2024 R1S Dual Motor Large Pack 21"
  • Start range/%: 75%
  • End rage/%: Forgot to record this, but we basically arrived home with around the same % as we had when we left
  • Elevation change: 100'
  • Total driven: ~35 miles each way
  • All-Purpose and Standard height the whole trip
  • Ranging from 2mi/hr to 7mi/hr charging
Charging:
I was mainly worried about the adapter working, and thankfully it did without getting hot all afternoon/evening/overnight. Not sure how I was only pulling 2-7mi/hr from a 30 amp outlet. There was a lengthy extension cord that the property owner left plugged in and I needed to use it to reach the R1S. I also lowered the amps on the charging screen for safety.

Using power from the R1S:
This also went well. Used a long extension cord with a reel to reach the picnic table. Plugged in a pressure cooker with no issues.

Sleeping with our cat:
We had a tent that attached to the back of the R1S. We wanted to give Nori the choice between her bed in the tent and our bed inside the car. So we left the liftgate open so she could jump between the two. We basically left the AC on at the highest temp and it worked out fine, especially since we brought a sleeping bag.

Extra note:
We started to notice the R1S pulling quote heavily to the right. I'm not sure if I can pinpoint when it started but it may have been a couple weeks. Getting it serviced this week so will update results here.

Here are some pics:

And a video if anyone is interested, or want to see our cat, Nori!:

the TT-30 is only a 120v plug, and 30a at that. unfortunately, I think the mobile charger limits you to 15a(maybe 12?) on the 120v plug, and then the 240v plug probably failed down to a lower level because it was only getting half the voltage it expected.
Ah right, I forgot that it's 120v. Learning everyday! Thanks!

I do kinda wish Rivian would make adapters for their mobile charger like Tesla does, where each one has a logic chip built in to auto-limit the mobile charger to the amperage for the plug that it's got... Use the TT-30 plug, it limits to 120v, 24A, use the 6-30, it's 240v, 24A...

unfortunately, we only have trickle and full-speed without manually limiting in the vehicle.

Try parking on a flat surface, then get out and check if the vehicle is sagging on any of the corners. Try to disable 'kneel mode' or any ride height adjustments before you get out. Then leave it to sit, and come back later (next day or more if possible) and see if any of the corners have sagged.

I couldn't say that a failing suspension airbag would cause the pulling, but I know they are moving to a new bag manufacturer, so they're clearly not particularly happy with the Dunlop ones they've got... They've already replaced one of mine.

I'm hoping it's just an alignment issue! I purchased the R1S from the shop and swapped to the 21' wheels, and now I'm thinking maybe it wasn't aligned correctly at that stage. Fingers crossed!

@ChargeSetGo we often go to our house out of town and take our cats with us. It seems like they're getting more comfortable with traveling in the Rivian, but we could never camp with them unfortunately.

I'll admit to being a bit jealous of your adventure

We are lucky that she is so calm and comfortable with travelling. We also tested a bit by napping in our car in the driveway with our cats to see who was the most comfortable.

We have two Ragdolls who have never been out of our house except in their cat carrier to go to the vet. I can't imagine either of them tolerating the harness or taking them camping - Thank you for letting me live vicariously through you. One of them does love the Rivian though...

They made it to the garage to show appreciation for the Rivian. That's a good first step!!!
