Is it just a matter of time before Waze is a navigation option? Curious as it’s one of the three available applications to mark my vehicle location in the Rivian app. Even Google and Apple Maps are an option as well. I don’t have any complaints with the standard UI and navigation.

No. Never happening. That goes in the CarPlay and Android auto bucket. Wassym Bensaid gave reasons for using their own Nav in his Q&A in April 2023.

No, you're misinterpreting what those options are, then you're extrapolating and jumping to conclusions.

The Rivian app allows you to choose which OTHER application you want to use to provide directions to your vehicle. The Rivian app queries the phone to find out which currently-installed applications on that phone have the ability to navigate to a location, then presents you with the list of those applications.

If you don't have Waze installed on your phone, that won't be an option.

If you have some other mapping software on your phone, you will also see that other software as an option.

This is simply a way to allow you to use your favorite navigation program to find your car.

Thanks. That makes more sense. ??

I’m going to quickly revive this topic as Rivian is starting to talk about how excited they are about third party apps coming to the platform. Waze could very well happen.

It’s certainly a possibility. Rivian’s running Android Automotive, which means Waze already has a version of their app that will run on it. The question is if Rivian will allow it, because the version that’s running on my wife’s Volvo is ugly. So maybe, if Google and Rivian can come to an agreement on UI. I would love to have Waze available, as Baltimore updates Waze with roadwork and event information, so it will always route around non-emergency road closurges, marathons, and whatnot. I haven’t tried out Rivian’s nav around the city much, but if it doesn’t automatically route around real-time O’s and Ravens traffic, it’s fairly useless much of the time.

I would definitely prefer to have Waze available for city driving, when I don’t care so much about efficiency or on-route charging.

That’s not true…you just made it up.
Rivian is already using Google mapping stuff to improve the navigation and Waze is owned by Google.
Don’t be so quick to respond if you are just making stuff up

It’s possible that we’re already getting the Waze road condition data through Google. I have definitely noticed an improvement in routing since the Google integration was added. Several times, when I wasn’t convinced of the route the nav was giving me, I checked in Waze and got the exact same routing/timing.

Most of the complaints I’ve seen about the Rivian nav have actually been about the destination database, and most of those were actually related to Alexa being terrible and not really integrated into the nav system in a worthwhile way. I never use Alexa, and have really had no issues since the most recent nav updates.

Using the Google Location API is a long way from implementing waze.

Yes and no. The primary advantage of Waze is simply that it has more people inputting road hazards and closures, as well as the community map editors. Where it’s routing is different is less to do with a routing algorithm, and more to do with the map editors making different decisions about things like road weights (read about when the editors flattened the weights for LA).

Google Maps also has access to all the road condition data from Waze, they just don’t use Waze’s road weighting, which is why Google Maps will tend to favor larger roads more heavily than Waze does.

Rivian also has the ABRP data, which is a lot more specialized for EVs, as well as the live data from your truck, and also allows for different road weightings based on things like incline and wind direction and speed.

As I said earlier, lately when I’ve compared routes, the Rivian nav has given me identical routes to Waze. Where they differ, it could very well be because there are factors that Rivian is accounting for that Waze isn’t.
I haven’t yet had the opportunity to try that in city traffic, though maybe I’ll try some test routes out during the next Ravens game.

Or is it the leaderboards and ‘road candy’ that you want from Waze? Literally the first thing I turned off after installing it (otherwise absolutely love Waze, and used it exclusively before I got my R1T).

It would mean Rivian totally reverts their decision to maintain their own software stack. I don’t think that is happening. They have been steadfast on this from day 1.

Rivian R1T R1S Waze Integration Coming? 69B481D3-769F-488D-BAE6-66D12DB381E6

Waking up old threads.

Lately, I’ve also been comparing routes generated from the Rivian software to Waze and it’s spot on. I’d just love more data about traffic and if it can be more pronounced on the map. Or, if it can show a dynamic route alert on the steering wheel screen showing accidents/heavy traffic/construction ahead.

I appreciate how much had changed with the Rivian navigation since I originally posted this.

Interesting. I routinely compare Rivian navigation to Google Maps and the routes are off about 2 out of 10. Sometimes significantly.
