Rivian offering preorder price difference vouchers for remaining price protected pre-order holders

Not really a fan of being at the mercy of whatever is in the Shop at the time you want to make the purchase. Very little selection of R1S vehicles right now. Hopefully that improves.

Better yet, just release a quad with in-house motors before September and let us use the 20% voucher on those too...

The discount voucher system does let them adjust pricing if they need to (possibly after whatever shutdown changes are made) and have it apply to everyone, not just new orders.

Think this might be related to the line shutdown. This refresh is going to be a little bigger than I think many are expecting, to the point that configs aren't going to match up anymore.

I suspect they're doing this because they're preparing to stop making the Bosch QM anymore. AND it unlocks people to consider their DM options. I can hardly wait to find out what they're up to with their April shutdown!

Would be a great way to force people into the standard pricing for the refresh. Perhaps refreshed vehicles simply wouldn't be available on the R1 shop until October? Rivian does think they can make the R1 profitable this year after all. Q4 numbers need to reflect that.

It is about time... they can't keep that liability of lower cost R1's holding them back, if they intend to move forward. Might even affect their credit rating, since their are probably thousands of people who still potentially get the lower pricing.

EDIT: Just logged in, yeah. No more way to configure. That's super lame. I've been watching the shop for a long time and at least in the Vancouver BC location, selection has been limited. The discount is fair (29% for me), and this strategy makes WAY more sense than having to maintain all the old and new pricing in their system, but why no configuration anymore??

I don't feel like paying extra for paint. But the silver is rarely available in the shop. So, it seems my 3% discount will cover the price of the paint or wheels.

I'm going to answer my own question with details from the email I got from Rivian:

Until later this summer, we will not be fulfilling custom configurations while we prepare for a major retooling at our plant. During this time, we are temporarily pausing access to the configurator and you will not be able to place custom orders
"

This is a great move. I believe it’s more than generous given they are giving customers till Sept. And interestingly this will mean a clean Dec 24 qtr - one in which they’ll benefit from no more LCNRV and fully benefit from the line upgrades.

Got the email as well and looking at inventory models. Cheapest I saw for dual motors lease was $514 a month after $7k down. Looks like that one disappeared.

Cheapest now is quad motor for $516 a month after $7k down.

This April shutdown must be a bigger change than what Rivian is letting on.


For purchasing a dual motor, does this mean those who signed that pre-pricing agreement could get the full $7500 off for 2022 taxes? Wouldn't be bad to get the dual motor for $64k and then get back $7500 from the irs.

This is what I'm curious about. I've had my R1T for 2 years and if I could use our additional 20% discount on the refreshed model...that would be awesome.

I'm surprised it's taken Rivian this long to change-up and get the early people to buy or not. Rivian at the end of the day is in the business to make money and allowing a smaller and smaller subset of their reservation book hold out perpetually is a liability.

This is also a way for them to limit early-bird pre-pricing on the refreshed product.

This is an excellent offer from Rivian for all the reasons mentioned already....stellar actually. I too am now on the bandwagon of a major refresh and given the new found Rivian love for a 'surprise factor', probably something very significant on offer as well.....
