Can we stop asking for CarPlay now? "The next generation of Apple CarPlay will take over all of the screens, sensors and gauges in a car..."

Say what you want, but to me the next gen of Rivian UI is inspired by Apple UX

"imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"
In light of layoffs and a money crunch, CayPlay 2.0 might be the quickest way to a semi-functional car UI at the announcement for a vehicle that won’t ship for two more years.

AM and Porsche are quite lazy when it comes to UI/UX in their vehicles. They spend their development dollars on engines, suspension, bodywork, and other silly things. Low volume, high margin, they don't care.
I certainly hope AM and Porsche take offense at such a mean-spirited comment concerning their work ethic, which likely isn’t true,

Doesn't Rivian spend their R1 development dollars on motors, suspension, bodywork, and other silly things (flashlight and camp speaker come to mind)? By your logic the R1 is perfect for a CarPlay implementation.

Work in the auto industry for a while and see how very different the division that creates UI/UX is from every other group. Lots of times it's even outsourced. Just look at the abominations GM put out with their Panasonic partnership, and Ford put out with their Microsoft partnership. Woof!

From the Apple anti-trust suit:
No. I still want CarPlay and Android Auto as options.

Note that CarPlay taking over all screens is an *optional* feature. A carmaker can choose to use that, or just “infotainment only” CarPlay; or even let the vehicle user choose which mode. It’s not a requirement that any vehicle with CarPlay must let Apple take over every display at all times.

There is a big difference between what a company would like to do, and what they actually do once companies push back.

I personally wasn't looking for full car play integration, but simply wanted a better navigation system.

I mean reading what I had of this complaint against I was literally laughing out loud.

“For example, if an iPhone user messages a non-iPhone user in Apple messages, the text appears not only as a green bubble, but incorporates limited functionality,” Garland added. “The conversation is not encrypted. Videos are pixelated and grainy, and users cannot edit messages or see typing indicators. As a result, iPhone users perceive rival smartphones as being lower quality because the experience of messaging friends and family who do not own iPhones is worse.”

The DOJ is also focusing on Apple’s smartwatch, Apple Watch, saying the company designed it to only work with iPhones, and not Android devices. The company’s decision means that “users who purchase the Apple Watch face substantial out-of-pocket costs if they do not keep buying iPhones,” according to the complaint.

In this case of Carplay, I think that wording is misleading. I am sure Apple said the next version 'could' do those things not 'will' do those things.
I view green bubble people as inferior because the green indicates they had the poor judgement to use Android, not because of the bubbles themselves.

Isn’t every business anti-competitive and looking for an edge? If we sued every company for trying to do something different and better we’d end up up in a homogeneous social distopia.

I don't really care if Rivian offers AA/CP. I just wanted to say that as someone who uses those in our other vehicles, and loves it when a rental car offers them, I think both AA and CP interfaces are total junk compared to both the Rivian and Tesla UIs.

Still, if people want the option that is fine, I just don't want Rivian to give up on developing their own software. Integrating hardware and software teams will always produce better results.

That is too specific, we should sue Tesla because they made it easier to charge their cars compared to competitors which gave them an unfair competitive advantage. Even now that their stations are partly open if we want discounted rates we have to go through Tesla, making the charging experience less seamless or more expensive than on a Tesla vehicle. /s
Yes!!! Exactly....

I exclusively use an iPad for work/entertainment. I wear an Apple watch for time but mostly for notifications as my iPhone is ALWAYS on silent. That being said….

I am a recreational pilot and have been wanting a Garmin D2 X10 Air watch for some time now. I am ready to cut the cord on Apple except for the ipad. Due to working internationally I HAVE to (due to costs) have T-Mobile cell service as I get unlimited data overseas, but T-Mobile is going to be one of if not the first to offer the Tesla (Starlink) phone before too long. Salesperson confirmed this last week in the T-Mobile store when my wife was getteing her new 15 Pro phone.

The day the “Tesla“ phone is available I will be getting a new phone and watch.

But getting back to CarPlay, yes I use it in my car/s, but all I really care about is WAZE, please just give me WAZE on my infotainment screen and I am happy.

Damn what is everyone's obsession with apple carplay?? I for one don't want it in my car, I don't need to see the apple interface on every screen in my possession.

What is it even good for? The only thing I can think of is Google maps and text messaging. Text capabilities will probably come at some point in an update, Google maps could easily be added as an app, or the Google API could be integrated into the native navigation app. It's also annoying with carplay constantly switching between the carplay UI and the native vehicle UI. If the vehicle has a truly shitty UI then yes, carplay might actually be an upgrade, but that's not the case with Rivian. I would much rather have Rivian dedicated to constantly improving their own UI, and investing in it via monthly OTA updates. Much of that would go away if they just gave into carplay/AA. So many carplay fanboys here I really don't get it... Also what's with people defending Apple any chance they can get ?

Honestly if rivian would hurry up and implement text messaging and improve their navigation or add native waze, a lot less people would want AA or CP.

Wow. That's insane. That's like saying they should sue Tesla because their chargers won't support multiple charge port locations.....
I want to put the seats from my Rivian in my BMW. They don’t fit - that’s Rivian being anticompetitive! Sue Rivian!

This lawsuit is the result of companies that are not innovators whining to the government. Yelp…. One of the most terrible companies out there that still exists only due to their own oppressive and anticompetitive behavior against business owners (Google Yelp Sucks) - lobbying an overbearing DOJ who has proven they are out to get tech firms, and has failed repeatedly, with Luddite legislators whose campaigns are funded by those same companies.

“The Justice Department and many of the companies backing this lawsuit spent two years lobbying Congress to pass the American Innovation and Choice Online Act (AICOA) and Open App Markets Act (OAMA), which would have banned Apple and other Big Tech services from offering integrated services to consumers.

They failed. And one prominent law professor said the bills “deserved to die.”

Around the same time, the Justice Department intervened in Epic Games’ antitrust lawsuit against Apple, over Apple’s App Store commissions and rules. But Epic — and by extension the Justice Department — lost that case in court.

This new lawsuit is the Justice Department’s attempt at a do-over for those losses.”

“What Klobuchar’s Bill Is
It would break tech products that millions of Americans use every day. Klobuchar’s bill, like House companion legislation by Rep. David Cicilline, would impose new “nondiscrimination” and “conflict of interest” provisions that would turn Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, and Microsoft into the phone company, barring the kind of integrated product design that makes their product more useful for hundreds of millions of people.

It’s a byproduct of swampy DC corporate lobbying. Like it’s companion Cicilline bill, it’s easy to see which sections of Klobuchar’s bill address longstanding lobbying by companies like Epic Games, Match Group, News Corp, Spotify, and Yelp.”
