Hi all,

There's another thread documenting trade-in experience and values that's (understandably) dominated by American owners, so I thought I'd start another thread where Canadians can weigh in on the trade-in values they received from Rivian for their vehicles, to help current and future buyers since Rivian won't value a trade-in until they've confirmed their order and entered the steps.

So.... If you're willing, please share:

1) Make, model, year, mileage of trade-in
2) Value that Rivian gave you
3) How did the value compare to Canadian Black Book, Kelly Blue Book, or other?

So curious about this too because it seems like a black box to me, so thank you for posting this! I'll be configuring and locking in the coming weeks/months depending on a few things

When I was preparing to take delivery of my R1S in June I briefly discussed trading in my 2015 Volvo XC70 with my guide in Vancouver. Without discussing numbers he advised that I was better off selling privately or taking it to a Volvo dealer because Rivian wasn't really in the used vehicle business. They would just sell it to a wholesaler.

It’s been a year but the quote I got on my Subaru was very low. They’re not in the business of dealing with the hassle so you’ll easily get way more selling privately.

It's more complicated than just the trade in value Rivian offers. In BC that amount gets reduced from the vehicle cost, which can put you in a totally different luxury tax bracket, saving you loads of money at the end of the day (yes, that's how it works, it's not like income tax brackets).

The US version of this thread has many reporting that they received entirely reasonable offers for trade-in, so I'm struggling to understand why things would be different in Canada.

Anecdotally, I visited the Vaughan SC a couple times within the first week they were delivering vehicles (before they were even officially open), and they already had 20 or so traded-in cars sitting on the lot (confirmed by a staff member that they were trade-ins). Given the small number of deliveries they would have done by then, I can't imagine that many people would be willing to take a significant bath on their trade-in....

I'm not saying you're wrong, just interested to see where this goes as others post.

Consider this response a bit of a "bump". :)

They used to give great trade in values in the US... Then they quit when they saw how much they were loosing at wholesale auctions. So they changed their trade in practices

They gotta be somewhere lol. I had my demo drive just in the blast couple of days and they had easily 15-20 trade-ins in the lot in Vaughan.

Ended up selling privately myself. I asked on Facebook and BC residents were all telling me the offers were ridiculously low.

Saw another 2 FB posts just the other day that someone was selling their model S privately and someone else a BMW because rivian trade in was too low.

In my case I didn't ask rivian but a dealer offered me $22k for my truck and I sold it in 24 hours privately for $30k so I wasn't even going to ask as I knew it wouldn't be worth it.

Hey Wing, thanks for weighing in with the input. I'm pretty sure you and I met at the SC when you picked up your truck. LG, 20's, OC? I was hanging around checking out colours before locking in my order, and we chatted right before you headed off back to Ottawa.

Yeah, I was oscillating back and forth between El Cap and Limestone, but have decided to go with El Cap.

I had a 2019 Model 3 to trade in, 65000 kms. Got the email to come get my R1T at the end of February 2023. I had already given instruction that I wanted to trade in. This was just after Tesla had launched a huge price cut in the M3 and all wholesale values had just dropped so I was expecting something low. Offered $28600 for my car when they were listing on dealer lots for $43 - $48k depending on condition. I thought I had 3-4 weeks to delivery so I put it on Autotrader for $40k and was contacted by a wholesaler right away that they wanted my car. Offered $35k from the wholesaler and I ended up contacting a person I knew in the industry, operated a EV only dealership in Victoria BC. I worked with both to get the best value to $38k from the dealer. Much better even considering tax savings than taking the trade offer from Rivian. My guide didn't admit but I could tell they were relieved they didn't have to deal with my trade in. Best buying experience ever, it was just a little better than the Tesla experience 4 years before because I was the only buyer in room at the time. My spouse will be putting deposit on R2 in the coming weeks and have an Etron to trade when that time comes.
