Slight Sideswipe in Parking Lot - Guess How Much to FIX??

I got slightly sideswiped in a parking lot. The guy was basically going the same direction as me and scuffed up the door and very slightly the front side panel.

Just looking at the damage seems high but the bulk of the cost is labor, if rates are 150 an hour that is about 58 hours of labor. ??

Maybe a bit high body shops are expensive. Last year I paid 1200 to have a hood on a Lexus that had fade marks on it resprayed.

Huge bills for what appears to be minor damage seems to be pretty consistent for Rivians. Hell I paid (well i guess the other guy’s insurance paid) $6.5K for what was basically a broken headlight. So at this point, 14k for that doesn’t shock me.

Has anyone seen a quote for auto body work on a new vehicle in the last 2-3 years that seemed like a good value? The cost of this has exploded for all new vehicles. Insurance companies understandably hate it, but this is why they are always battling with shops over repairs. They get screwed and they pass on all of that to us in the end.

Can’t tell if there are actual scratches in the paint? If not you might be able to use PDR and buff out the rest. It might not look perfect, but it would be much cheaper.

Was there any damage to running boards and the mount points? If other party isn't paying, I would check with PDR. There is nothing EV or Rivian specific here. Door and fender damage is all I see. Sometimes replacement is close to repair cost. Body shops want to repair because it's good for them.

Two comments:

First, this is a truck at its core, despite its cost and various luxury features. If driven as the truck gods intended, it’s going to get dinged up. I never sweated (and never bothered repairing) the various rock scrapes and dents (nothing structural) on my 2013 Land Cruiser, and lo and behold they had a minor effect on 2023 resale value. The first scrape on the new baby is painful though.

Second, professional auto body repair for consumers is often unreasonably expensive because they tend to try to make everything ”good as new” and are usually unwilling to do anything less. The Rivian body panels strike me as on the thin side compared to my prior trucks (I’m no expert) so they might be hard to fix with the old fashioned dent puller-bondo-buff it out approach if anyone still knows how to do that. Somehow the dealers who take dinged up vehicles on trade-in manage to fix them up at much lower cost.

I paid $9000 for rear passenger door and minor touch up to gear tunnel on driver side (after my wife backed into the parked truck!)at certified repair center in Tempe AZ

Our i3 got rear ended Dec 2022... $17K repair (the other party paid 100%)
It was expensive.. but the shop did a fantastic job on the repair, no one could tell it was ever hit.

Was it just me that was disappointed I didn't actually get to guess the quote? Gotta move that photo to the top . Good luck with the repair!

Friend hit a deer this fall and my guess was 6% off the actual (nearly spot on if I had included tax) $28k for a BMW X5.
