I don't believe the unit connects to the Rivian at all (except power). Audio goes from phone to car.
Correct, not mandatory to connect it in any way to your truck other than for power, but it can connect to the Rivian for BT audio and I guess you can connect to your Rivian WiFi hotspot vs. your phone hotspot if you'd like for data.

Edit: of course if you want to use Carplay or Android Auto the unit has to pair to your phone.

When using carplay or AA, it just uses the device's internet connection...I don't think there will be a built in wifi chip on the screen that would allow you to connect and manage a seperate internet connection (i.e. rivian hotspot)

All these devices have to connect to something that connects to the internet... that's generally your vehicle's hotspot (if you just want to run maps or other native apps on the device ) or your phone for Carplay/Android Auto on the device.
In order for the device to have it's own independent internet connection it would have to have a built in cell modem and SIM card and $$ subscription... but it doesn't have the hardware for that.

The procedure with these "Smart Screen" devices is to run Carplay or Android Auto on your phone, then pair the device to your phone.

Here's a similar Smart Screen Device on Amazon.. notice the phones in the illustration running AA/CP..

Rivian R1T R1S CarPlay & Android Auto Smart Dash Screen has arrived! New from EVSportline.com 1702436386707

I seems like the EV Sportline offering is much more than the referenced unheard of company in China, with a total review count of 20 ?. But sure, most link to a phone (as you show in that example) and run CarPlay via that method. I have something similar to the one referenced, but a different form factor - unheard of Chinese brand priced right around $100. Looking forward to this @EV Sportline replacement to that and having direct BT audio fed to the Rivian system and NOT via an FM transmitter, like my current junker. I recall there were several posts a while back that described how this offering is different than the never heard of company name stuff you see on Amazon.

Looking forward to trying it out soon!

I’m a little confused about how this will work actually. From the product page:

https://evsportline.com/products/apple-carplay-smart-dash-screen-for-rivian-r1t-r1s

Simply connect your smart phone to our Smart Dash via Bluetooth, click the CarPlay button on the screen, approve the CarPlay sync message on your phone and viola!...you're done!

How does screen audio output work? You have 4 choices:
2 - Bluetooth wireless to Rivian audio system / speakers. This is the recommended option for best music sound quality. Music streamed / played on your phone will be wireless Bluetooth connection to the Rivian audio system and play through the factory Rivian speakers using factory Rivian sound controls. Steaming apps CAN be controlled on the Smart Dash Screen using CarPlay or Android Auto, while the audio plays through Bluetooth to the Rivian!

If my iPhone is connected to the Smart Dash Screen via Bluetooth, how can it simultaneously be connected to Rivian Audio via Bluetooth? Does iOS support
simultaneous Bluetooth connections? I’m not a tech guy but I thought Apple managed simultaneous streaming via its proprietary AirPlay technology, which I don’t think is Bluetooth based.

Take your iPhone. Open settings. Select BlueTooth, and you can see all the connected BlueTooth devices. See how many devices you can connect. Surely there must be a limit.

I think the answer provided previously was that the audio is BT from the phone to the Rivian, but controlled via the displays link to a CarPlay running on the phone.

CarPlay uses Bluetooth to set up the connection between the phone and the vehicle and then it switches to use the WiFi for the actually functionality.

Bluetooth connection limit is 7 devices.

this device has no native apps. It connects to phone for CarPlay or Android.

the phone sends the audio to the car via Bluetooth.

Initial BT pairing with the device helps establish the CarPlay connection then switches to a peer to peer type WiFi connection to drive screen projection from the phone. Meanwhile, the phone can use a BT connection to the car to stream audio and handle transport commands (such as play/pause, back/forward track). You will need to have your phone BT paired first to the car. This is my understanding on how this will work

Send all love letters and notes to, “Mr. Sandy ‘cheapening’ Munro”!
Save ~$20 per vehicle, and make customers mad. We’ve seen feature and aesthetic erosion for the sake of cost and scale. Customers have lost trust that the thing they placed a deposit on with be the thing that gets delivered.

Agreed on the questionable quality of the no-name device I used for a reference as a system overview on how these AA/CP devices connect to a phone for data. The forum member I was responding to believed that the device had it's own native built-in mobile internet connection, so I needed to show an example of how these devices need to pair with a phone to work. I was not suggesting anyone purchase the device I used for an example.

I have also ordered the EVSportline device for my R1T as I know EVSportline will be around after the sale for support, etc.. IMO, that's worth considerably more than saving a few $$ on the initial purchase.

FWIW- if you do feel inclined to purchase one of those crazy named Chinese devices (or electronic rear-view mirror or "waterproof" BT speakers, etc..) from Amazon- purchase the extended warranty because when it fails Square Deal (the aftermarket extended warranty seller) will have no choice but to send you a full refund as there is no way these crazy named brands will be around for warranty replacements once they sell through their inventory of goods. I got full refunds on two sets of "waterproof" BT speakers I used on our boat for two years. Both of the sets actually failed over the winter so I assume it was a battery issue vs water intrusion issue.

Ah, that's very helpful. Thank you.

So, if the phone switches to WiFi after initial setup, can the phone still connect to the Rivian Hot Spot in this setup?

No, if you want to connect the phone to another WIFI source, you'll be shutting off CarPlay, effectively.
