I want to start off by saying I have only purchased used Toyota's and a Tesla Model Y before this. Not including Title and Registration. Rivian charges $2147. Tesla was $1390 two months ago. Does anyone else think this is a little too high? Also Documentation fee - states that it is part of Colorado Dealer Preparation Fee. I do not live anywhere close to Colorado. Are all cars being processed in Colorado?

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Are you buying directly from Rivian, or 2nd hand?

It’s kinda like tip-flation

It’s my belief that semi-unregulated destination fees are an opaque charge that are abused by oems as an additional way of padding the bottom line.

But since we lack transparency, the market decides based on consumers’ willingness to accept it as a part of the overall purchase.

It’s interesting that it only applies to new vehicles and is passed on to the consumer. For used vehicles it’s considered the dealer’s cost of doing business.

Doc fees are another matter but similarly get passed on to the consumer as a “processing cost”. It started as a junk fee and became normalized.

It is what it is. If you want your Rivian you'll have to pay it?‍♂

FYI- I checked my purchase contract from Rivian for 12-30-23 delivery in Bend, OR.. Transportation(delivery) fee was $1800 and Documentation fee was $225. Neither were negotiable. Title registration was negotiable- I told Rivian I would handle title and registration . They charged around $500 for that third party service last year. Your contract doesn’t appear to have that charge. From forum threads, it became a mess. Maybe they dont offer it anymore.

My breakdown is:
Destination Fee - $1800
Documentation Fee/ Dealer Preparation Fee* - $347
Vehicle License, Registration, Transfer and Titling Fees - $238.58
Taxes - 5K... (I used to live in NJ, really miss the EV zero tax)

*Colorado Dealer Preparation Fee: this charge represents costs and additional profit to the seller/dealer for items such as inspection, cleaning and adjusting new and used vehicles and preparing documents related to the sale.
