You are getting panicked over something that we know nothing about yet.
And that is my problem. They have the solution, but don‘t want to share it with us until tomorrow.
Probably the worst way to communicate something. Either tell us or don’t. This half and half is BS. It would have been better to say:
“We expect to have a solution figured out by tomorrow morning and will update you in the morning”
or “We have a solution and it’s [details]”

The way they did it is the equivalent of your girlfriend telling you “we need to talk.” Then you rush over all freaked out thinking she is about to break up with you and maybe that’s the case or it’s something super dumb like “you should eat less burritos.” And you are freaked out over nothing. If you don’t want me to eat so many burritos just text me live, dont freak me out. Yes, I like burritos…

I just don’t relate with this thought process at all. Not at all how I think and process new information.

Life’s to short, take a breath, there are so many other things going on around the world that this is like a grain of salt in the shaker.

I'm going with it is an OTA, but first we must talk to a csr on the phone where they talk us through the one time code to put the Rivian into engineering mode and do something there so it will review and install the update

You just need to admit you are frustrated and there is really nothing they can do or say that will appease you.
That’s not true. They could tell me “We have an OTA that we are finalizing now and will be pushing it to you tomorrow.” That absolutely would appease me.

As an fyi, i have a 1K mile roadtrip / camping / off-road trip planned starting Sunday am. That trip is basically canceled If I dont have my R1T ready to go before then. So getting info now vs later is pretty critical.

- Can’t change drive modes or ride height. This would be really irritating if on a road trip or if stuck in off-road mode with a 25 mph limit with a highway commute home.
Or if you have a tire change appointment and they can't raise the truck and set it to "tire change" mode. Sigh.

They probably need you to be present and make sure that you won’t be operating the vehicle at a specific time. It won’t be a usual update where you can activate on your own via app. A technician or someone on Rivian’s end will push it once they have your confirmation.

I didn't start the update, so my R1T isn't experiencing the issue.

That said, my totally uninformed speculation is that Rivian first thought they would have to fix the cars via a manual/on-site process. That would have required at lot of on-the-ground resources, which they wanted to avoid. It likely has taken them quite a bit of time to figure out how they could bring the cars back to normal operating conditions via an OTA fix.

It seems as though they have now made progress and feel the fix can be done via OTA update, but won't be absolutely sure until they can complete testing. Thus, the status update by tomorrow AM.

I did not download the new update but screen was bricked this morning still. Anyone else had this happen without downloading update ? App still shows 38 version . Any suggestions for reset ?

That would have required at lot of on-the-ground resources, which they wanted to avoid. It likely has taken them quite a bit of time to figure out how they could bring the cars back to normal operating conditions via an OTA fix.

It seems as though they have now made progress and feel the fix can be done via OTA update, but won't be absolutely sure until they can complete testing. Thus, the status update by tomorrow AM.
This was my read on it, too.

Got this update right before dinner.
Rivian R1T R1S Software Update 2023.42.0 is out (⚠️ UPDATE: OTA fix rolling out today 11/15/23) 1700019607027


Looks like they have a solution. Just don't know the detail yet.

By the way, I'm not a software engineer but AFAIK, the issue is caused by an invalid certificate (through the cloud I guess)? Could this be solved by temporarily validate the certificate on the cloud side to let the vehicle boot properly?

Has anyone happened this to a loaner car??!? ?
My R1S is in shop and on a loander R1T... why did I hit the update button... don't ask. it looked like a good idea at the moment last night.
Of course I didn't get the text or email since it's not mine... I guess I will text my SA.. they should know more tomorrow... or just bare with it as I am scheduled to pick up my R1S this Saturday :facepalm:
