Reading thru some of the threads today talking about pucks..

I have a ASE background, and I cant understand why you cant just use a standard jack (not bottle) to lift up a corner by the control arm, as mechanics have been doing for nearly 70-100 years..

Can someone explain this to me?

Also, I asked in another thread, and never got a good answer.

My wall charger shipped today, and I am working on getting it installed.

It says 60 amps.. Is it total of 60 amps, so 30 amps on 2 separate poles, or 60 amps with 2 60 amp breakers on each pole?

If my reading is correct, its 2x 30 amp breakers.. Can someone verify?

Yeah I held one corner up with a jack stand (didn't have another jack available) under the control arm with a small block of wood in between to soften it, when I rotated my tires the other day. I used a bottle jack and magnetic puck from the set I bought on other corner. Seems fine to use control arms like this. But probably not ideally safe if going under the vehicle.

For the charger, ideally you just want one 60 amp breaker. I wired mine to an existing 30 amp for now because it was already there and wired. But can easily upgrade in the future.

I haven't tried lifting off the control arms myself.

60 amps in from one hot leg and 60 amps out the other hot leg (Actually 48A but breakers are sized as 48A*1.25 for continuous power) . It's alternating current, so the direction of current changes 60 times a second.

So I am stuck on a step... And I still have not gotten a call, email, or any type of contact my from "guide"

How do I get ahold of this person?
I confirmed my R1S from the shop last week. Wondered about a guide, so called my local SC. Next thing I knew SC said they'd contacted him and he'd be calling, which he did the next morning.

So I just found I have a 8 gauge wireset already going to the location of where I am installing the charger. How much slower is a 50amp circuit going to charge one of these?

50 amp circuit you can charge at 40 amps which is around 9.6 kWh. Close to 18-20 miles an hour for the Rivian.

Refresh my memory... And what is the 60amp? I know its 48amp charging, which translates to what kWh (11.6?) and Miles?

It is 11.5 kWh. About 23-25 mikes an hour.

I have the 60A and I wouldn't even notice it down to 50 for my use. You'll be fine.

I just confirmed my R1S order from the Shop...

And my heart is about to jump out of my chest. Not from excitement, but from being scared. The anxiety is real!

I have never purchased a new car before, and in fact, I never intended to ever buy a new car.

I have never paid more than 10k for a car.. This is quite a bit more than that!

I am a car guy/wrench head. I love turning wrenches. My body.. Not so much any more. 1 blown disc, and 4 semi-blown discs will do that... And having 2 kinds under the age of 5!

Any words of wisdom out there?

As configured is in my signature.
I'm going to try and help but I'm not sure I'm as smart as I need to be for you.

There's a rule I heard once: Don't let short-term wants impede you long-term needs.

I don't know about your situation so let me guess: Does the purchase impede your ability to buy a home, get married, have kids, pay for college (you or kids), retire, etc.

If not, visualize yourself 4 years into a 5 year loan. Rivian is 4 years old, 12 more months of payments. Now, ask you yourself 4 years in the future this question: "Was it a good idea?"

That's the best I can do.

I would call that a win. Unless you drive way more than the average person, you will not need 48amp charging. The cost of installing 6 gauge with a 60 amp breaker can be very costly depending on the distance from the panel.

Congratulations! I can see this being a mind-blowing first new car purchase. It was our most expensive car purchase, too, and I finally got to say that thing that mature adults say: This car cost more than my first house. Having said that, it’s worth every penny to me.

I hope that you allow yourself to enjoy your new Rivian and that you have at least as good an experience as I’ve had. If you do, you’re going to be VERY happy that you got a Rivian.
