Not sure if this is a good thing or not.

This would mean these service centers are still THAT backlogged even with an around-the-clock work hours.
I think it's a great thing. They are doing their best and remember, SCs don't just handle repairs, they also handle all deliveries. Especially during the end-of-quarter push, this accounts far a SIGNIFICANT amount of their bandwidth.

Also a small comment on backlog. I know not ever SC is the same, but the longest I've had to wait is 5 weeks, but I told them to delay the appointment until I could get a loaner. The other three appointments were scheduled within days, including one mobile visit.

Yea, it’s good to see that they’re maximizing their service center capacity. Even Tesla is not doing this. But, that equally means Rivian is completely maxed out, especially during the last month of every quarter as you say.
2-5 months wait time for a service center appointment, even with 24-hour work hours is not a great look.

Why not??

Not everyone at the shop needs to know how to work on an electric battery or drivetrain. To hire only those with EV powertrain experience would be a foolish move, especially when most issues aren’t related to the powertrain.
Because knowing how the vehicle works as a whole is important. What are those people supposed to do when the only things in the shop are EV specific problems, stand there with their hands in their pocket?

A lot of the technicians I met at the San Jose service centers came from being technicians at legacy oem dealerships. Perhaps as Rivian takes greater market share, they’ll have more options to hire from legacy oems.

Fortunately, the vast majority of problems with these Rivians are not about their powertrain.

Plenty of other issues to take care of on another vehicle. I doubt any of them are standing around with hands in pockets

I know they are trying ? Im rooting for them I just know with increased production is going to create an even bigger bottleneck at the already extremely busy service sector.
And if they improve initial quality and QC at Normal, Service wouldn’t be as strained.

Service bays are probably a bottleneck too, so it’s not just more people that’s limiting service times

Can't just hire anyone. Probably needs to be an ASE certified mechanic. Laws are pretty strict around this sort of thing.

Rivian should be training the non-BEV techs they hire so that with time...they are capable BEV techs. So if they somehow run out of non-BEV stuff....head over to all the buried BEV techs and shadow them. Win win.....attract talent with training and educating (pretty sure all techs recognize BEV is their future) and then retain the talent you developed.

In reality all non-BEV should be assigned some percentage of time with a BEV tech, so that most if not all are BEV capable with time. Even if backlogged. Need to develop people to keep them around.

Right now they are struggling to get service techs for any place period. Not sure they would have enough staff to accomplish this.

My parents are doctors and they worked nights sometimes. I have seen what that does to a person and family. I don't wish that on anyone. I am absolutely fine with waiting a few more days to get my car fixed.

This is exactly how it is at my local service center.

The tools, instructions, and other guidance provided by Rivian corporate is so robust that anybody that knows how to turn a wrench could work there. Although the vehicle may be different, anybody that's worked for other manufacturers could work at a service center and talking with those that do, they love Rivian much better.

Although I don't think we need 24hr service centers, I think they would benefit from being open on Sundays and longer hours like many legacy dealerships.

A lot of people out there want other people to work shift work. But they won't do it themselves. How many people want to work an afternoon shift, say 2pm-10pm, especially if they have a wife or kids? Leave for work when the kids are still in school, get home after they are all asleep.

I work rotating shift work. When some people that work regular day work find out what my position pays, they think it is overpaid in relation to what they do. But they won't apply for the position when one is open, because their wife or kids wouldn't like them on that schedule. And now, with people working from home, they are even more unlikely to want to report into an office. People don't want to work my schedule, but they think I am paid too much to do it.

It’s all. Not enough service centers, not enough bays at each center, and not enough man hours.

This can all be fixed by something A TON more simple: stop letting cars out the gate from the factory with issues.
