I have 3076 miles on my R1T, charged at numerous RV sites an on RAN. So far, I haven’t paid a penny yet. (Used adventure and waypoint
network sites.)

I put 12k miles on my R1T and now 2k on my R1S. I charge for free at work and there are 3 RAN's on my normal long distance routes. I haven't paid anything for electricity in the last 18 months. I have filled up my F250 2x in that same period. :)

Haven’t watched the video but are these people comparing gasoline costs to DCFC? Because if so, they are clowns.

16k on the R1T and 5k on the R1S. Total cost of electric over past 12 months was $384. (Utility company gives unlimited L2 charging for $31 a month)

Much better than $384 in gas which would only get me 1800 miles in my previous truck.

The point is to charge at home and not exclusively use DCFC

I love bean counters. They're a blast to mess around with on a daily basis.

1 penny to charge as much as I want. Go ahead and run your spreadsheet using this rate.

Don’t even get me started on the 50 kW charger by my house that charges me a flat penny for unlimited charging session.

I’m not here to save the environment, I’m here to save my wallet first.

2493 miles so far and haven't paid a cent. I L1 charge in my condo garage each night. Driving the same places in my Tacoma cost me about $200/ mo.

Not going to be a money thing as you can buy two very nice Tacomas for the cost of an R1T. How long does it take to buy $40K in gasoline? 16 years?

any cliff notes for the Count? He has an aversion to starting videos with no real description of the take away lessons. As you probably already know, the Count doesn't suffer fools gladly.

Why? Because DCFC is more expensive?

I love people talking about free charging at RAN or at work. The point is - if you do need to pay (for trips, etc) - how much this will cost? And it will cost more than 20mpg ICE car. Even in Texas, where EA is about 37c per kW, it barely breaks even. Add to the cost $200 EV tax per year and more often tire replacement. I drive EV's not to save money, but because I like it.

Said that when you charge at home at 13c per kW (Austin. TX) - it is ~60% cheaper than 20mpg ICE. And obviously, if you have access to free charging - that is a whole other thing :)

I agree with your answer, esp. in regards to home charging. I just find some of these videos grating as they suggest that EV charging is always more expensive even though some EV’s rarely visit a DCFC. The end result is misinformation I.e “EV’s are more expensive to fuel than ICE” rather than the more accurate but less click worthy, “sometimes, for some vehicles, the occasional road trip might be more expensive in an EV”

It’s also because gas stations and DCFCs are fundamentally such different things that the expectation for them to be on cost parity or for DCFC to be cheaper seems strange. To then feign surprise on a YouTube video when they are not the same seems weirder still, as if the ability to push 200kW out of a socket on every street corner was a trivial matter of implementation.

All ICE vehicles get 100% of their energy from gas stations. For the majority of EV’s out there, DCFC’s provide maybe 5-20% of the lifetime energy. That along with the much smaller number of EVs means that the market size and scale is drastically different. This should result in business models that are also very different and, I believe, a cost per unit mile delivered that cannot possibly be the same.

Furthermore, if you operate a DCFC in the middle of a typical long journey, and are the only option for someone making that journey as is often the case today, economically speaking you can then demand almost whatever $ you want and the customer will pay it.

Put another way, if the EA in Green River, UT needed to cost $1/kWh in order to guarantee ample stalls that will always deliver over 150kW, I would gladly pay the $50-$80 to get quickly on my way, because I only need to do it once every 2-3 years.

EA charger in Texas on a road trip. Much much much cheaper than filling up dinosaur juice in a V8 with a lead foot.

We still lucky to have some places with per min charge - I do not think that will continue for long.
The regular per kW price (EVGO, EA, others) ~0.37c plus.

Competition is a good thing and will continue to push prices down as more station are built out and renewable energy is deployed. EA, EVGO, Chargepoint, etc. will have to offer lower prices to attract customers away from Tesla's extremely reliable 33 cent flat rate with a charging plan in Texas right now.

Tesla already has member plans for non-tesla CCS charging at 33 cents in Texas using their Magic Dock.

I'll take my chances with electricity rates over the next 8 years which is how long the battery pack and drive train warranty is on the Rivian versus being a slave to the pump and filling up the coffers for some oil baron.
