This seems like a sensible financial option to offer for Rivian's part. The quad motor is more expensive for Rivian and they might as well give the pre-price-hike reservation holders the option to choose it and many will prefer the longer range.

Related: does anyone know if the dual moto will be quieter than the quad? I'm not a huge fan of the motor whine on the quad.

I just noticed that quad vs. dual warranties are not the same.
Comprehensive warranty: Quad 5 yrs / 60k miles. Dual 4 yrs / 50k miles
Battery pack warranty: Quad 8 yrs / 175,000 miles. Dual 8 yrs / 150,000 miles

Drivetrain warranty: Support website does not show a difference ... but the warranty booklet says drivetrain is same as battery pack (quad = 175k miles, dual = 150k miles)

Really wanted a bit more range but now switching to dual is making less and less sense. Save $500 and lose a year of warranty. Weird that rivian has less trust in their in-house motors.

I see the warranty difference as a de-content and cost-down maneuver. There's not much difference in the warranty for battery, motors, gearboxes, and inverters. I would, however, be concerned about losing a year of warranty on suspension, HVAC, driveshafts (not considered "drivetrain"), R1T tonneau, etc.

I fell in love with my R1T immediately; I would love the extra range of the max battery so I want to purchase the dual motor performance with the max pack. I was excited to see you can now order the dual motor option but then the max pack is gone! When will the max pack come back?

My R1S configurator now shows the performance dual motor option, but not the dual motor AWD base option. Any idea if that will be added to existing R1S configurators?

pre-price hike and dual motors is available. Is saving $500 worth 19 miles? $1500-2000 will pique my interest
My guess it’s that this is probably intentional because they’re trying to clear out inventory of the quads that are accumulating. There seems to be a higher demand for the dual motors.

I asked Rivian via chat about R1S configurator opening up for post-March 2022 orders (my backup order)... nope. Not yet. I think those who configured before June 2022 are fine.

I'm super curious what a R1S non performance dual motor with post-hike prices are like.

For my R1S, I see 2 options, but no max pack battery just yet. Did they indicate when that would be?

I see the same in my (pre price-hike) configurator. I can now choose to downgrade to the performance dual-motor option and:

* Save $500 (yawn)
* Gain 17 miles of rated range (always nice, but only 17 miles?)
* Lose 170 HP (that I don't really need)
* Lose some drive modes
* Get a slightly worse powertrain warranty (though I'm not going to reach 150K miles in eight years)
* Almost certainly lose more than $500 worth of resale value, given that the quad motor costs $3K more to new buyers

I am not tempted. Now had the savings been $2K, then perhaps I would have taken that deal.

I read somewhere that the standard range battery pack, 260 miles, won’t be available until 2024.

Rivian will be motivated to offer the lower priced 260 mile battery pack once the Cybertruck goes into production. Tesla claims they now have 1.9M CT reservations.
I have a reservation and will probably buy it, if Elon sells it for 50k. I am sure there are a lot of people like me.

Max isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Once upon a time it was a huge battery increase, but now it’s only 10% more range give or take. That might not be enough to make a material difference in your driving experience.

It appears that the non-performance is the same as the performance in most cases. Performance gives you the Sport driving mode which increases torque by 20%. If you buy a Performance and use All Purpose or any other mode you’ll essentially have the same experience as a non-performance R1T. That’s what the reviews seem to be suggesting. Some people wonder if Performance might be an improvement in other parts of the vehicle, like suspension. However, since Tesla sells extra performance upgrades and they use the same hardware it seems likely that the R1’s have tue same hardware and “Performance” is just a software upgrade.

Interesting. Have people not seen the Dual Motor in the configurator or something? These screenshots are what I've seen this whole time (including Dual Motor Performance, which appeared a couple months ago).

Hmmm... Weird. I wonder if they're building some estimated cost savings into the up-front pricing for the dual-motor by trimming some warranty incentive off the back end. Bean counters do funny things like that.

What about in California where EV batteries must have a 10 year warranty as of this year? ...or does that go into effect next year?
