Tested: 2023 Rivian R1T Performance Dual-Motor Hits 60 MPH Before You Finish Reading This Title
It stops and handles pretty well, too
  • Performance model packs 665 horsepower and 829 lb-ft of torque.
  • It does 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds.
  • It stops from 60 mph in 126 feet and pulls 0.85 g on our skidpad.

So it’s true. The performance dual is only "performance" while in Sport Mode. In All-Purpose mode it’s a standard dual:

"It's 2023 so riding in a 6,760-pound electric truck that hits 60 mph in 4.4 seconds is a casual event. But as quick as that time is, that's what the R1T Performance does in its default drive mode — All-Purpose."

Those of you with Quads, do you use All-Purpose for daily driving, or Sport? If I plan to drive in AP it seems like the $5000 Performance upgrade would be largely lost on me.

If my family is in the car, all-purpose. Primarily because of the difference in comfort, not speed. Just me though, most of the time I'm in sport.

The dual-motor (standard) and the quad-motor variants make sense to me. I'm still trying to figure out where the performance model fits in. For $3000 more you can get a quad motor which seems like a good deal but if you are cost sensitive, you are probably going with the standard dual.

Same here. Sport mode can be a bit bouncy on some roads and tapping the full sport mode performance isn't a nice thing to do with unwilling passengers.

Dual motor for me is 5k and Quad motor is 6k.. So I am going quad motor..
But even for 3k more, I think Quad motor is the better option. I mean, if you're spending 90k+, why not get the best of the best, right?

I got the $3k value from doing the "Explore the R1T" on Rivian.com:
Dual-Motor AWD: baseline
Dual-Motor Performance AWD : +$5000
Quad-Motor AWD: +$8000

Yeah thats the regular price.
I pre ordered the R1S in March 2022. I missed the price hike by 20 days, but they locked in the Quad upgrade for 6k, instead of 8k.

I live in Seattle so there's an argument for offroad on most of our city streets. I use all purpose almost exclusively when in the city and switch to sport when out of the city on smoother roads.

AP mode unless I'm in the canyons, then Sport mode all the way. And yes, there really is a difference in the quad too, but the suspension is damn uncomfortable on any rough road in Low/Stiff. One of the interviews between Munroe and RJ it was mentioned that Sport mode gives you an extra 20% torque and I definitely believe it after tossing the truck around a bit.

I leave mine in AP the vast majority of the time. It’s enough to make me and the kids laugh while making my wife pass out.

I haven’t even tried Sport mode … yet.

Iiiiinteresting. So even in Quad the performance mode gives extra punch. I'm not sure why that's surprising to me. My intuition was that Sport Mode merely changed the suspension and handling. Now with 20% more torque! :muscle:

"Smoother roads" are pretty much a myth in Oregon, so All Purpose for me, most of the time. Although you do make a great case for Off Road while on some older streets around here.

Not for me. I’m using AP on city streets and switch to Sport on freeways, just I-5 so far.
