Cool, I'm excited to actually see the options come to fruition. My F150 has a flip/fold design which I am kind of used to and is strong enough that I could technically climb up on or abuse at the lumber yard.

I like that the flip and fold design locks in in sections, for partially exposed loads or 2x4's leaning up over the tailgate.

Since I am a post-summer delivery, I hope to see the tops in action and get some forum member feedback.

Tentatively, I liked the powered option until shown that it may be a soft cover. I'm not so certain that I am a fan of the piece together manual top, but I'll reserve judgment. The flip/fold hard cover I have on my current truck seems more robust and more convenient than the current manual kit-top.

But progress.

I thought the manual cover would push in just like the power with no motors. This kinda sucks. I’m bummed it’s got to be pulled out and stored.
The one in the video is literally exactly what they described from day 1 on the website.

Bravo! Nice case, nice inter-locking and easy! I'm glad I pre-ordered it for $800 - can't wait till I get it. But wow! the automatic one it looked/sounded great.

HORRIBLE design for the "manual" version. To have to pull it out each time you need it open? That's just ridiculous. Manual one's should still retract as all do so you can easily open and close it as needed for use.

People open and close their tonneau covers all the time to access things in the bed. This is just a horrible design. Thank goodness I have the auto cover. Would NEVER go for that type of manual cover.
So I was just curious, are you a fan of this new design? :):CWL:

Still mad I can't order the manual at my early pricing. I ordered my truck with a $1500 POWER cover and now they are charging MORE for a manual one. AND I can't retrofit the new power one. Sucks.
I would happily trade with you.

i know a lot of folks think the $1800 for the manual tonneau is steep, but dont forget that also includes the installation of the rails on the side of the bed for the Rivian made manual tonneau to slide into. if you dont this from Rivian, i'm pretty sure new builds will not have the rails which means 3rd party tonneau's will not be able to slide in/out but only the ones that sit on top of the bed will work.

Yeah it basically does.. you think they're going to continue producing parts and bumping labor into broken tonneaus for free? Over and over again on the same car?
No. I think they'll replace it when it breaks (if under warranty). I don't think they're going to replace the defective designs until they break, and I do think they're going to hope some people limp along until their warranty expires so they don't have to replace all of them.

it may be that the panels have a cover that keeps the debris out...
agreed, i have a feeling its some sort of hybrid mix of soft-ish cover and hard frame or bracing underneath.

And when they fix the broken ones there will retrofit

Ugggh, this seems like a pretty poor design in terms of practicality and function for the manual tonneau. Hoping we'll all be able to switch out to the powered one as we were told that we'd need to order the manual to have the rails installed if we ever wanted the powered tonneau fitted.

I had the Bakflip tonneau on my old truck and that was great. Haven't really seen any complaints with the new design just yet but having to remove all the panels in order to access something on the inside is going to be a real pain. This pretty much happens on every single camping trip, road trip or ski day I go on. Whether someone needs to get something out of their bag or you're dropping someone off, not having their stuff directly in the tail end of the bed means complete removal of the slats every single time. Sometimes stuff slides all the way inside if not fully loaded and to have to wiggle your way under the cover to try and reach something will also kind of be redongculous!!!

Hopefully I'm not being a Debbie downer lol I'm no engineer or designer but this immediately came to mind seeing this new design. Vent over. Have a nice day =)

I am curious when they will offer this for new builds - mid summer like the retrofits start, fall or next year.

The rails are and have been molded into the bed sidewalls from day one, they add nothing for people who ordered the manual tonneau. If you ordered a R1T with no tonneau, you may have gotten one with the rails because that the only bed parts they had available when they made that truck or you may have gotten one without the rails in which case you can not install the manual tonneau.

For $1,800 you get (4) panels and (1) carry bag plus instruction sheet, nothing else.
