Honest question: if they are able to get a reliable automatic cover working that's durable long term, why would anyone want the manual cover? Is it cost only or for other reasons?
I'd still go for manual, one less thing to break. I also would have opted for manual vents if it were an option. Haven't had any problems, but more things to break, means more things will break.

They've said they'd repair failed tonneaus under warranty... That doesn't mean everyone gets the new design.
Game on, let em try! I can break any old style powered tonneau with 3 minutes of any "repair." That includes the 2 minutes waiting for my PAAK to open the truck.

Doesn't seem like you'll have to put much effort into making it fail....

I made one for much much much less than that in the meantime and works perfectly... as a mater of fact, can make one out of aluminum locking panels that looks exactly like that for much less... Not very impressed for a 100k truck. I'll wait to see what the pricing is for the power version.
Your DIY cover [post #87] looks very nice. Can you post a materials summary and high-level how-to guide? thanks

Actually my biggest reason for wanting the cover was to keep idiots from throwing garbage into my truck.
Wait, this is a thing people do? Yeesh

Are there wrinkles in the front left corner showing on the motorized one?

I don’t want a motorized vinyl tarp.

HORRIBLE design for the "manual" version. To have to pull it out each time you need it open? That's just ridiculous. Manual one's should still retract as all do so you can easily open and close it as needed for use.

People open and close their tonneau covers all the time to access things in the bed. This is just a horrible design. Thank goodness I have the auto cover. Would NEVER go for that type of manual cover.

Anyone who has a power tonneau knows how laughable the notion is that Rivian will only replace those that fail. They all fail!
Knock on wood repeatedly - I'm at 9 months of ownership and my power tonneau works fine. It got stuck opening literally the very first time I opened it while the delivery person was still there, but I saw that it was just that the last panel wasn't riding on top of the second-to-last panel like it should, pushed it from underneath so it did, and it's been reliable ever since. Every few opens, I will "guide" it, pushing up on the last panel to make sure it goes up-and-over like it should; and sometimes I'll stop it before the last panel enters the stack, but most of the time I just open and close it normally, and it works fine. Twice it has stopped closing mid-close, but opening and closing it again has worked.

Waiting to replace until they fail has the benefit of spacing out the replacement. If they just say "okay, recall to replace them all!" they'll have a rush; and while the prior recalls have all been fast, this one would be a lot of work, so it makes sense to only replace them once they fail.

Same experience as you. Mines broke 3 times and have been able to fix one way or another. Guiding it in and giving a little push on right side is key. And dry lube. But it takes way more babying than it should.

Which reminds me, I should probably dry lube mine. Still haven't done that yet.

Super excited to update my electric tonneau ASAP. However, I’m very disappointed in the manual solution. I’m sure there was a mandate to use the channel intended for the electric version. If you have ever owned a truck with a tonneau cover then you know that this manual option will never be convenient - at least if you actually use the truck bed. They should have made an effort to copy the BAK MX4
