I called it in earlier posts! Ole Sandy gets goosebumps tearing up a Tesla.

The moment Rivian moves to Tesla quality anything, I'm out...

Due to Sandy's advice Tesla makes 5 times as much profit per vehicle compared to Ford. That is attractive to any manufacturer. We just have to hope RJ knows where to cut and where to preserve his soul.

Nothing against Sandy, but Tesla was turning profit well before Sandy got involved with any tuning of their assembly or parts sourcing.

This was driven by absolute necessity as if they didn't lower the cost of production, they wouldn't survive. Tesla had it much more difficult than Rivian - Ford, Amazon, and others didn't invest Billions - and the entire industry had it out for them.

All the while, people were buying their vehicles like gangbusters because they were the only game in town that provided not just the vehicle, but the charging network.

I want Rivian to adopt production efficiencies, but I don't want the them to ruin the product by following a Tesla blueprint. Teslas are the EV reincarnation of Kia's in the 90's (Sandy's words not mine).

In order to do that, they will need to raise more cash. My personal hope is that Rivian gets further investments from manufacturers like Mercedes who want to share their platform for EDVs and that Amazon will pony up more $$ to solidify Rivian as the manufacturer of choice for replacing their entire fleet of vans (not just the initial 100K order).

The amount of gushing Sandy did over Vinfast, Aptera etc makes me want to never take any of his opinions seriously. He can be easily bought.

No you’re right batteries are expensive. The thing is, if they want mass market appeal they need to keep that quality. The people who are willing to sacrifice for an environmental or virtue signaling reason have already done so.

People like myself, who are the traditional consumers of luxury vehicles, aren’t going to buy an EV if it is a far cry from someone’s ICE luxury car. The environment isn’t the reason I got the Rivian it’s because the R1T is the best vehicle on the market for my needs. Only an EV can still two the load capacity, handle like a decent sport sedan and have the acceleration of a super car.

However if the interior was shit and it didn’t function like my Audi I would keep going with ICE as I’m not willing to sacrifice the creature comforts I’ve come to expect. I would say I’m probably close to the mainstream buyer at this price point. If the car gets cheapened up too much people like myself won’t buy it.

That’s why this is my first EV, it was the first mainstream one with capability and enough luxury.
But EVs have advantages over ICE in other areas. They drive better with single pedal driving. They accelerate better. No urban pollution. No garage fumes. No gas station visits. No oil changes. More cargo space (frunk, no transmission hump, etc). Safer in an accident. Better boat launch capability. Better traction control.

So, as Tesla has discovered, you don't need to be as good as an ICE in luxury areas for many people. Obviously everyone is different and has different needs...

Is this why they used magnets on the trim panel?
Yes, even Munro was confused by the magnets and commenting that they chose the most expensive way to attach a panel. In fact, the design can get you out of jam quickly.

I'll say this much. Sandy loved the BMW i3 for how forward thinking the design and materials were - to the point where he practically gave away the detailed teardown report he normally charges $$$ for because he loved that thing so much and he wanted other manufacturers to adopt the design and manufacturing processes.

I recently had a health scare and have been recovering. My i3s has been sitting untouched since January 4th. I got in it today for the first time since and it had lost exactly 1% in battery. That blew me away, especially with all the phantom drain we hear about in the R1s.

BMW did something right.
