More people on these forums/ reddit seem to talk about carplay over AA...
Many people are also baffled that Rivian’s values/priorities don’t align with theirs.

We're approaching this all wrong, asking Rivian to launch CarPlay.

Rivian's market cap is 18.3B
Apple's cash reserves is $51.355B

Dear Apple,
I would like CarPlay in my Rivian R1T. Can you please buy Rivian?

Thank you,
Just becuase they could doesn’t mean they can.

Worldwide yes, in the US, no. Apple recently captured 50% of the US market share. Also, there is an income skew on iPhone ownership, so I have to wonder if there is an even higher % of iPhone ownership in RIvian's potential and current owners?

"For the first time ever, there are more iPhones in use in the US than any other type of smartphone. Citing data from analytics firm Counterpoint Research, the Financial Times reports the iPhone overtook the entire Android ecosystem in June to claim 50 percent of US market share."
Apple ownership certainly correlates strongly with wealth, which some AA users apparently resent.

I'm fine with what Tesla has done with integrating message, calendar and Apple Music. I use carplay a lot in rentals and its still clunky compared to Tesla software. But I suppose that arguably Rivian won't be able to match Tesla. The traditional OEMs had such a horrible time doing infotainment well that Carplay was an obvious move.

Not necessarily a joke. It's entirely possible that the R2 won't be sufficient to keep Rivian as an independent company. That may mean Rivian becoming a division of a conglomerate like Tata Motors, or purchased by Apple.

My largest concern with Rivian beyond the R2 is employee retention as it becomes clear that the stock is not TSLA.

Has this tweet from yesterday been posted?

Which tells me they have no plans to open up their development with an SDK to allow developers to at the very least build their own apps for it if they choose to do so. Rivian will be a massive bottleneck and it won't scale. So they'll be spending time reinventing the wheel with calendar and texting (Or just not offer it and be literally the only vehicle without it) which will take development time away from things like dashcam and vampire drain fixing. Nice

While I like Android Auto, I would really be happier if they just let me cast my phone to the screen. Then every app I have (google maps, netflix, amazon prime, etc) would be accessible. Give me a button that lets me toggle between the phone and car display and a button to condition the battery because I know I'm on the way to a charger.

Ironically, I think the fact that they are trying to develop their own software for navigation etc shows they are a "real car company" haha, name me a car company out there that doesn't think they can build software better than apple and google. Even most of the companies that support carplay and android auto do it begrudgingly, require wired connections, etc.

Sustainability is certainly a concern. The question will be if the brand is valuable enough to be picked up IF the company can not continue to operate as it is. The problem also is that the government may not be as willing to step in for a bail out since the workers are not UAW.

But all of that is out of my realm and it's Wednesday.

So back to a lighter note. Could you imagine if Apple bought Rivian and STILL said - sorry, no CarPlay.

Ha, wouldnt happen though. They'd either give it the same Carplay everyone else has or build some more robust native Rivian version into the system. No way would they wouldnt use their most established system and engineers to capture even more data from peoples phones.

I don’t think that anyone who says CarPlay is saying “Not Android Auto”. At least that’s what I think. It’s like saying Frisbee or Kleenex to them and they’re not trying to dis.

I have seen Android folks specifically saying “not CarPlay” and playing out some social beef in the forums.

I like the term “phone projection” I’ve seen written here and I think that’s what we’re all after.

Apple car would probably run iOS apps natively. Yes please!
