I would think that this is a valid third party evaluation, he would have no real reason to sugar coat his opinion and certainly had a lot of miles to hammer a prototype that was not fully baked.

Interview David Alexanian
Somewhat. He obviously formed strong relationships with the Rivian team that supported their journey & knew he was being filmed for a Rivian video. I would be shocked if he said anything critical, and if he did Rivian edited it out.

I am a pre-order holder from the end of August 2019. I am very confident this truck will be the last truck Iā€™ll ever owne Iā€™ve owned at least five trucks in my lifetime and I am confident this will be my last truck.Back when I pre-ordered my queue was 13,400 hopefully Iā€™ve moved up to six or 7000 thousand. Since I live halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento I am hopeful my truck will come at the end of June keep my fingers crossed.

I think the first few dozen will be delivered in June. Certainly not 6K+. Granted, many would not be LE R1Ts, but hoping for June is much more optimistic than is justified.

I think they will do some prebuilding & I'm guessing at least 2K.
They said deliverys will start in June but not when they will start producing vehicles.

Not to be a downer, but there is a flip-side to this. Rivian has had prototypes for years now. Yet, theyā€™ve only demoed the vehicle in heavily Rivian-controlled environments like Long Way Up, Rebelle Rally, and the testing/on-locations videos theyā€™ve posted.
Not sure how Rebelle Rally was a Rivian-controlled environment. Aside from Rivian providing support on the truck and filming, the contestants were calling the shots. Given that they did that with the first validation vehicle off the line and Emme Hall, the driver, actually IS an automotive journalist who reviews cars, I'm not too worried about them providing review vehicles for publications.

Funny, of all the cars I have owned the Scout is the one that stings the most that I sold it lol. Having three cars older than me, having a kid, moving into the city, yada yada - it was the responsible thing to do but...I still think about tracking down another 800B after a beer or two :)

I have an 800a. Named my first born son after it. Still love it!

I know for a fact a lot of employees, also guides, are in our FB group definitely monitoring.
They surely pay several ā€œsocial media specialistsā€ and I guarantee you they hang out in Facebook groups and forums like these as part of their jobs.

Iā€™m guessing(hoping)that Cali will be first in line, as I think the greatest number of orders will be from here. My pre-order date is 11/2019. Wishing to have delivery by my birthday in August. This will also be the last truck I buy

August may be optimistic with a 12/19 order date. Mine is 9/19 LE R1T, and Iā€™m guessing Sept/Oct. Parts of CA (Bay area, SoCal) will definitely be early priority geos.

I am a recent newcomer to the Rivian world having made my deposit in mid-March. I have serious concerns about shelling out what will end up being $90k for an SUV that is made by a new manufacturer to the point that I am considering putting $100 on a Model X or buying a Model Y in the near future. For me, $90k is a lot of money. I am giving up a reliable 2019 Cayenne when I trade it in. Sure, it will be getting close to the end of the warranty period, but that is a different discussion. Also, this will be our first EV. So, as my wife asked today after she test drove the Model Y, why do you need this car? Ultimately, I decided on making the deposit because I liked the vehicle AND the deposit was fully refundable. I like the idea that RJ floated into the ether about this company. I also think the shape of the R1S is more usable than the Model X or smaller Model Y. Plus, the R1S with the max pack should get over 400 "claimed" miles per charge. The Model X is at 360. So, I will likely wait for the max pack, but that is definitely putting this SUV into the 90k range. The other issue is that I am probably not seeing my Rivian until 2023 based on what a lot of the other members of this and the other forum have told me due to how late I made my deposit. So, that is another reason why I may end up switching to Tesla. If I knew I was getting the Rivian in early 2022, I would stand pat. But, new manufacturer, $90k, may not see it until 2023 ... things may change. The other posters have made great points as to why the company itself should be on financially stable ground. Personally, it is worth the risk to me, but I may not have the patience to wait another year-and-a-half.

Not to put a damper on things, but the Max pack will not be available on the R1S. They will be coming out with a larger pack (XL pack?) but almost certainly with less than "400+" miles.

Only time will tell what the ultimate product quality at reliability issues will be, but at this point I see the refreshed Model X having the same potential issues with the complete retooling/redesign/refresh. The advantage with going with Rivian is they will still be in the phase where they bend over backwards for their customers for service/loaners/etc. That period is long gone with Tesla.

Since you've got your deposit down, it's worth hanging in there for a bit to see what they announce for the longer range R1S and how the order timelines play out. You could possibly get one in 2022, but no way to tell at this point.

There is another benefit to being late to the party. Many people will have purchased, driven, and posted about it on these forums. You will know well before your number comes up about the build quality, performance, reliability, customer service interaction, real world range, etcā€¦. By many very opinionated people who will not be shy about calling out any short comings.

If nothing else that and the warrenty Rivian is offering, should go a long ways to easing your concerns or changing your mind to pull out.
