Rivian said that it would start on the 16th, so does that mean some early owners are going to start getting charged for membership and if so how much?

If they don’t want to say, it makes me nervous that it will be high. Rivian obviously think highly of themselves regardless of what others do.

They did not say that at all. Here's a refresher of what they said, because clearly some people completely misread it:

- There was once going to be an all-inclusive Membership that was free for a trial period and would include several benefits, the first of which were unlimited LTE and free RAN charging. Others were mentioned like off road recovery, events, etc. but those never actually came to fruition. So up until now, all the "membership" included was LTE and charging and it was free for an undetermined trial period.

- They have decided to no longer do a bundled Membership, and instead will offer things separately for owners to pick and choose what they want or don't want.

- The only things that existed were LTE and free charging. They addressed those by saying LTE would continue to be free through 2023 and charging would no longer be free after April. After December, LTE will be an optional subscription if owners choose to have it. The cost and what it enables will be determined sometime prior to that. Charging is self explanatory, you'll pay at the pump after April.

- In the future, they may develop new vehicle features or services that would be offered as an optional subscription.

- Administratively, this "change" would go into effect on January 16, meaning the paperwork would no longer talk about a beta/free bundled Membership service/program, because it no longer exists. Everyone will now be told that LTE is included through December 2023 and charging is included through April.

That is what they laid out in the email communication. Nothing changes with the vehicle until January 2024 when people will have to decide whether to subscribe to the LTE plan, just like they would when that trial expires in any other new vehicle purchase.

Great how much does it cost? How long will the price be a secret? How long of a period of time will it be included after delivery if at all? These are the questions that most want answered.

If they are looking to create new SKUs to sell us I think we have some runway here before that happens! Just a hunch I have as it takes some level of execution on their end to make that happen. We’re good for now.

Great how much does it cost? They have until December to decide. If you need to know sooner, you can research the market for what the range of possibilities is. The answer is likely between $10-$20/mo, but it depends on what is included. The direct cost components for them that they'd be looking to pass on are a) the data plan from AT&T and b) licenses for any specific optional features, such as Live Traffic for example (don't know if MapBox charges Rivian for that or not).

How long will the price be a secret? Until it's not, but no later than January 2024. They quite possibly have not decided what will require the LTE plan or not yet, or simply prefer to wait until they have real time market data before announcing it. Who knows what the industry standard will be at the end of the year, but they lose flexibility by announcing it early and to date it's not information buyers have required.

How long of a period of time will it be included after delivery if at all? Through end of 2023 as of now. They have until then to decide whether/how long it will be included going forward. It would make sense to have a trial of some length because sales will be higher if you stand to lose something vs. gain something you never had. But this can be reevaluated at any time going forward, as it's essentially just a sales incentive.

It's more information than 25,000 people to date have needed/received.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
For reference, I kept getting called by Sirius to renew my subscription after I canceled post 1-year free trial on my MDX. They unbundled content from traffic data shortly thereafter, and for $49, I ended up with what I presume was an accidentally-forever license since it never stopped working, but I never paid another dime. Should have been $49/year.

So - $50/year for traffic (if it’s good and trustworthy) sounds reasonable. $100+ a year for full internet in the car also sounds reasonable.

Not knowing their cost basis, it’s hard to guess, but a basic subscription of like $10+/mo and including +/- 100kWh a month, with cost+ on the energy consumed afterwords, wouldn’t be out of line. Would make sense for me with weekly trips to Tahoe during the winter, assuming I’m not waiting around at the Truckee RAN forever. That site is small - considerably smaller than the Supercharger down the street.

Don't worry, we'll get a bill in December that will be backdated to today.

If you park in a garage but don't drive every day, sometimes you get lucky and get to skip the deactivation days. I had XM in one of my cars for years after the trial expired until I parked it outside for a week.

That is hilarious to me, from a software operational perspective anyway.

That car was always parked outside, but sometimes under trees. Makes this even funnier.

The trial period was clearly stated as 1-year post delivery, and included free charging at RAN stations. Everyone who has taken delivery should demand from their guides that they get free charging until their one year anniversary. I honestly don't care if there was fine print or not. This one is a pretty clear bait and switch for people that already have their vehicles and were told they'd get a year of free charging, in writing.

My 1 year falls within the current expectation of the new timeline :(. I'll whine and moan if they don't have any of the RAN stations going in my state before then though.

I just posted some notes I made with regard to evaluating Rivian/Nationwide insure in early December. The agent, located in Normal, had some insight over a month ago. Snipped from that post, available here, I was told by the Rivian insurance agent:

1) Me: There is a rumor that if I purchase through Rivian/Nationwide, I get priority vehicle replacement. I don't have to wait in line. Is that true?

Agent: You will be given access to the "shop" to pick a vehicle from. You don't get to spec a vehicle and move to the top of the line. This has been under discussion and will be made public "very soon".
NOTE: It seems likely this will be a part of the "membership revisions". I understand "batching" and production scheduling play a part, but was a little disappointed since I might have to either wait for some time for a vehicle I liked or accept one that was a different color/spec.

3) Me: With respect to tow coverage. Rivian has indicated in the past, that they will "recover" the vehicle, even "off-road". I'm not sure that has ever been actually tested. Do I need Rivian/Nationwide insurance then?

Agent: Rivian provides this for the "first year" After that, Rivian will offer coverage (through us) coverage including off-road recovery as a part of the membership program that will be more clearly delineated "soon". This has been passed through legal and Rivian.
NOTE: I did not get qualification of the term "first year"! But she said this delineation was "eminent" and confirmed it was OK to discuss openly. Given the nature of the vehicle (new) and reports of Rivian's change in towing I purchased Nationwide's coverage for $40 per year that includes 100 miles of towing. Including for a "jump start". This could get interesting!

Free charging is worthless when the only chargers have been out west.

Not driving 2000+ to use free charging. The local DCFC has been waiting for hardware for at least 3 months, probably longer.

I think a certain amount of miles or kWh provided without expiration would be better. 10k miles or 1000 kWh used, etc. I dunno.

Free RAN charging is nothing to the majority of us.
