As a PSA, it took Rivian a good 3 weeks to get my private party purchase converted over from prior owner. This was after having a bill of sale, title in hand, and other paperwork submitted to Rivian.

I was polite, played the security card, and still got passed from service call to guide to some other department of redundancy department.
Can only get better

Someone explain to me why ownership transfer can't be self-service? Read: Why doesn't Rivian support this, perhaps with a quick back-end verification?
Why should Rivian build this? It may be quick from the consumer point of view but it would be far from quick to develop. How do they guarantee it isn't hacked/abused in some way, and how does this benefit them financially to take away from their limited software development workforce?

Ok... Others have had issues with this exact scenario, but I'm sure yours is different...
Rivian is the issue, not user or my WiFi mesh. Full stop ?

Honest question: Did Tesla have geofenced mirror folding from the first year of Model S production or did the feature get added later via an OTA update?
Probably later update, but since Rivian copied many Tesla UI features they could at least have copied this one! ?

There is no Gear Guard access from the app, or anywhere but the truck for that matter. They would only have access to location, state of charge, and control of a few vehicle functions.
yes, I misspoke as I was thinking Telsa. I wouldn’t know how the Rivian app work because Rivian has yet to transfer ownership. So, whatever the app allows, the old owner can still do it - like setting off the horn in my garage last night. BIG MISS, Rivian.

Maybe in the future it will... But that's got to be WAY down on the priority list.

Other manufacturers who have been around a lot longer don't have comprehensive self-service, either. I have experience with Volvo, for example, and they allow me to self-deregister in the app when I sell a car, but registering a new vehicle to my account requires contacting Volvo corporate customer service or the local dealer.

Thanks for the info!

In that case, maybe it’ll take Rivian a year or two to roll out these features. If they can beat the ~3 years it took for Tesla to do the same, maybe @jebinc won’t consider it to be lame.
It IS lame. They copied just about all they could from the Tesla UI and steering wheel controls. Tesla didn’t have that “head start” back in 2012. ?

Right. Did the Rivian fanbois here belittle you for mentioning it as well? ?

Building a scalable solution (manual or automated) seems like a win for both the old and new customer involved, avoiding delays in accessibility and in the ownership experience. Which means Rivian is involved in the customer experience beyond delivery and service.

That sounds great for putting the feature on the future roadmap, I'm sure it's on there somewhere. But I don't see this pushing the feature to the front of the list. It simply has no business value at the current moment, and will not effect short-term sales.

meanwhile, the prior owner has access to EVERYTHING I'm going, including gear guard video, from his Rivian app. Yeah, its true. I sent a complaint toe "[email protected]". No way to delete prior owner, or block access without going through the week's long Rivian ownership transfer process.
The information the previous owner has access to:
  • Current state of charge and charging status while charging.
  • The ability to sound the alarm
  • The ability to open and close the frunk and windows
  • The ability to see the current cabin temperature and turn on the climate control system
  • The vehicle's current location
  • The list of "drivers and keys" - which does mean they could revoke the new driver's Phone As A Key, disable key cards or key band. But notably the carabiner key fob cannot be disabled via app.
Yes, this is worrying. But if you don't like it - park the vehicle away from your house and wait for the ownership transfer to occur.

There is no ability to view Gear Guard video from the app.

Sounds about right if by business value you mean prioritizing revenue (deliveries, features) over non-revenue existing customer experiences.

Except secondhand customers are a small percentage of existing customers and also less likely to be a future revenue stream.

Yep, good point. I don’t consider it an edge case, as this will continue to be a customer engagement point with each resale. But not the priority for a company just starting to find its footing.

I think they’ve had their hands full with higher priority items. When the first R1Ts were delivered to external customers there wasn’t a functioning garage door opener or bird’s eye view. Something tells me most owners would place a working security system at a higher priority. They’re adding features, maybe slower than we’d like, but they’re still making progress.
