Best I can tell they accepted Rivian's temp tag, and my guide has told me it's in the DE DMV system and I should have tags [S=0===0=N]... I did not transfer a plate from my old daily to the truck. I will be contacting my guide again today to press the subject!

Call the DMV or look online (if your state has it) to verify that DMV actually has it in process.

Rivian told me repeatedly that it was delayed because of my DMV being behind but when I finally reached out to my DMV, they confirmed that they never received any of the documents from Rivian or the third party company.

Is there a way to select to do this ourselves?

I'm in TX and have learned the hard way after three out-of-state purchases that the dealers will collect the taxes etc., and then refund them after a few months of trying. I just bought another car in May and warned the dealership about this and they assured me that they knew what they were doing. Two months later they refunded the money and asked me to do it myself. So, Rivian is not alone. Probably has to do more with the very efficient DMV people.

Your guide should be able to arrange that. After 4 months, expired tags, and rental vehicle, I opted to just do it myself.

Unfortunately, you still have to rely on Rivian getting you all of the necessary documents, which they failed to do in my case.

It's extremely common to see cars with temp plates that expired months ago. I ran into the same situation with my Polestar last year and my neighbor had the same issue with his Subaru. We kept driving them until our plates arrived.

I’ve been pulled over for similar BS in TX like having no front license plate. You will also get hit with significant fees in many states if not registered within a certain timeframe. In my case, it was 5% fee.

Real issue, as has been stated already, is that banks can get fussy without collateral.

Got same story from my guide. Nothing visible online, so got frustrated and called local DMV. They said they got the info from Rivian, but was $230 short, so they mailed it all back to Rivian the day before I called without trying to contact me...ugh. Would have taken 10 minutes to give them a check for the shortfall. Has been back in Rivian hands for another 2 weeks now, and still nothing from Rivian. Guide says the registration dept is working on it. Temporary tag expired 2 days ago. Don't need a rental, just want to drive my R1T legally. Got my new 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV 2 weeks ago, received title by FedEx within 10 days of purchase. Super Cruise is WAY better than Drive+ on Rivian.

This is NOT good PR for Rivian, as friends ask me how I like my new truck and ask why I am not driving my R1T! I realize Rivian is concentrating on production speed, and I get that, but RJ needs to pay attention to these kinds of details. I want the stock price to go up, not down, and stuff like this isn't helping!

I preemptively requested to handle the registration myself. My guide should have an answer for me tomorrow and I'm taking delivery on Thursday. I can be in and out of the DMV in an hour versus waiting 90 days, so hopefully they just agree. We'll see.

Yes. I had my rental for 15 days before my plates finally arrived Thursday night

I’m curious, have you heard anything from Rivian about plates? I am also in CO and my temp plates expire next week. Guide said that the documents are “at the DMV”.

I received my R1T in Mid March and I still don’t have it registered in Oregon. 90 day Temp permit - expired, 2 Oregon trip permits - expired. Now its just an unlicensed paper weight and tired of the excuses my guide has given which never seems to be right. However, I just received a notice from OR DMV saying they have received my registration from Rivian but they shorted the DMV fees by $362 so they can‘t process the registration!!! Love the truck but this is the worst car buying experience I’ve ever had.

My guide is apparently also an attorney. I told them my plates expired on Sunday and they replied

You should still be able to drive the truck since this is a DMV issue and it's on them

Officer, its' the DMV's fault.

In reality, I don't think the police are too worried about expired tags right now - they know everything is still a bit of a mess. They'll probably only pull folks over if they are looking for PC so they can check something else out (which could mean you get pulled over if they are curious about the truck)
