Driving through the plains of Nebraska I decided to do some testing of efficiency vs speed. ~15 min sections see photos. Not scientific by any means.

65 ~ 2.1 mi/kWh
75 ~ 1.9 mi/kWh
85 ~ 1.6 mi/kWh

Keep in mind 20” ATs, roof rack with awning installed, tent over bed with dry bag on top.
Great data! Thanks so much for posting and sharing. About how much estimated range are you getting on a full charge with the 20" AT's and all that gear?

Here is my trip computer for my trip so far, a lot of time at 85 mph but still getting 1.85 mi/kWh. My estimated range hasn’t updated at all but that would pencil out to about 230 miles.

Thanks guys. I wasn’t aware of the charger in Trego so great tip @scooter.

My brother lives in Chetak and my mom in Ladysmith so as long as the EA chargers work in Eau Claire I should be golden to get there. My father also lives up in Eagle River so if I want to try to get up there I will need to get creative to get back.

The other stretch I am less sure about is through Iowa and southern Minnesota. Looks like enough fast chargers but with less familiar operators at least to me.
up for some camping? In northern WI the chargers are few. I just got land up in Mercer WI and will build in a few years and put a Rivian wall charger in the garage. when my Rivian comes (Oct-Nov this year) I will most likely need to camp at the one RV campsite in town to get a suitable overnight charge when I go up to visit. Watching your thread and enjoy they trip!

Hey all made it to my first destination in Ladysmith Wi.

Made it to Albert Lea last night and stayed at the hotel next to the charger then one more stop in Eau Claire to get up to Ladysmith, arrived at 56% and a drive for dinner to 50%. Currently charging at 2kW :(, charger in Ladysmith at the electic coop would not activate. Working on getting setup at 6kW at least while I am here. Not sure what else I will explore while here before heading back sometime next week.

Getting here from Western Nebraska.

Charge 1: Grand Island, NE, 70kWh delivered in 28 min, 25-70% …. $7 charge :)

Charge 2: Council Bluffs IA, 67kWh delivered over 3 sessions and 21 min. Got kicked off a couple times, once while in the store so wasted 10 min. 15-59%.

Charge 3: Waukee IA, 95kWh delivered over 43 min. 11-77%

Charge 4: Albert Lea, MN, 81kWh delivered over 36 min. 15-71%. As I reported last night the 350kW unit maxed out at 168kW but I checked into the hotel while I waited. Fast enough.

Charge 5: Eau Claire, WI, 81kWh delivered over 38 min, 21-78%. First charger I tried started hot and then dropped to 38kW, tried again and same. Switched and charged good. But again by the minute so gotta love the $9.60 charge :)

So for those keeping track. I traveled from Portland OR to Ladysmith only using Electrify America chargers and one night at L2 at a campground.

Summary 1 way - 2490 miles, 1.85 mi/kWh, Total charging cost: $363

Thanks for that test, 75 looks lIke a sweet spot between efficiency and travel time.

Here in oz, the national limit is 120kph (approx 75mph) but most states cap it at 110kph (70mph approx) . Most people that tow caravans tend to only go 80kph since it is the legal minimum on some national highways, and they do it simply for the fuel economy. Unsurprising to see more power used as the speed increases but simultaneously reassuring that the losses of an EV are similar to the ICE's..

So if I was to take an R1T across australia, I'd be paying approx $1 AUD for every 7.6km which would be around 2.5kwh, and thats at the 70mph region. Pretty nice really.

So I ventured up to Eagle River, WI. I was able to rig up a 40A temporary circuit to charge my truck. I charged up to 100% to make the 114 mile journey (each way) from Ladysmith to Eagle River. The drive is mostly state highways with 55mph speed limit.

I drove in conserve the whole way at just above 60 mph. Round trip with a drive to dinner totaled 250 miles. Arrived back in Ladysmith with 16% SOC and 46 miles of estimated range available. So seems like 300 miles would have been doable in conserve even with the 20” ATs, roof rack, tent, awning etc.

I wonder what your efficiency would look like if you took the dry bag off the top... seems to me the awning and rack would cause minimal additional drag (especially if you aren't noticing it noise wise), but the position of that dry bag and it's lack of any real aero I would think would cause all sorts of disturbance.

When I used the bed rack on my Ram 1500, if I had boxes that extended just beyond the side of the cab or over the top, it would significantly impact the range.

Also, what awning is that?

Here is my post on the awning:

https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/roam-adventure-co-5’-awning-installed-on-r1t.6882/

I am not sure on the dry bag vs the roof rack/awning. I suspect they are both somewhat minimal, since the dry bag doesn’t sit up that high above the cab. Also I did not have the dry bag on yesterday for my drive up to Northern Wisconsin and my efficiency was pretty good but I suspect that has more to do with the lower speeds.

Your vehicle color / rim combo is beautiful. I’ve configured my R1T / S a million times, and have settled on that combo (S though, not T, I think). Just really classy…

Well to wrap this up after a marathon drive back across the country over the last 4 days I am back in Oregon.

Return trip rundown:

Charge 1 - EA Eau Claire Wi
Charge 2 - EA Albert Lea MN
Charge 3 - EA Waukee IA
Charge 4 - EA Council Bluffs NE

Hit a hotel in Omaha to rest

Charge 5 - EA Lincoln NE
Charge 6 - EA Grand Island NE
Charge 7 - EA Colby KA
Charge 8 - EA Flagler CO

Hit another hotel in Colorado Springs

Charge 9 - EA Fountain CO - Free :)
Charge 10 - RAN Salida CO - Also Free - Thanks Rivian

Hit up a camp spot in Colorado at Cottonwood Lake

Charge 11 - EA Edwards CO
Charge 12 - EA Grand Junction CO
Charge 13 - EA Green River UT
Charge 14 - Spanish Forks UT

Hit a hotel in Ogden for the night to rest up for one more long day back to OR. Sadly more hotels than camping on this trip. Just found it more efficient than finding camping and setup and take down

Charge 15 - EA Perry UT
Charge 16 - EA Heyburn ID - This was a doozy, got in an argument with some lady who thought it was fine to park at the charging station because she was only going to be there 10-15 min. I tried reasoning with here but she was not having it. There was a cop sitting right there and he said nothing he could do and then threatened me with disturbing the peace because I dropped an F-bomb. Sadly... but I got charged and on my way
Charge 17 - EA Boise - Stretched my range a bit to get here without having to stop in Mountain Home
Charge 18 EA Island City OR - Again stretched my range because I didn't trust that Huntington OR was working and plus it is a few miles off the highway. Juiced up heavy to make sure I could make it to Hood River if Hermiston wasn't working but luckily...
Charge 19 EA Hermiston OR - It worked great and was free!

Then I stretched my range to make it back to Sandy OR because I didn't want to have to stop in Hood River or Troutdale. Long trip but now the truck goes in for service today, now to sleep for 3 days...

Some notes. A lot of EA chargers de-rated to 50 kW fortunately didn't have to use any of them, almost in Perry UT but was able to get the other 350kW unit that was frozen and get charger as the other two 150kW wouldn't work. Also I noticed a several 350kW behaving like 150kW like they used to all the time, even in stations that use to give >200kW.

Interesting encounter, but not uncommon for Idaho. Significant anti-EV sentiment throughout that state.

With the lack of available Electrify America chargers through Wyoming I have to go 250 miles out of my way and drive up eastern Idaho if I want to go to Jackson, WY or Yellowstone from Denver. I have had a number of interesting conversations with people while charging my EV's in Idaho Falls over the years and cannot wait for Electrify America to get its butt in gear and get I-80 through Wyoming open so I can avoid eastern Idaho at all costs on trips to Jackson or Yellowstone.

And, thank you for the write up. Seems like an epic trip.

Ah, they're just upset that they weren't able to steal land from Oregon in that really bizarre "Greater Idaho" scheme recently.
