Awesome will PM you.

Do have another question which might interest others in NC - my guide was telling me that I would needed 'weighted' plates since the truck weighs so much. Did you end up needing one or were you able to use a standard plate/registration?
I’m really not sure - I haven’t yet received the plates. I always thought the weighted designations had something to do with towing.

Yes in NC you need weighted plates for anything with a GVW over 7000 pounds, I think. I am transferring plates from a Silverado 1500 which required weighted plates (I have the plate just not the registration cad for it, which FWIW I got the title application notarized and sent to Rivian as requested the day after delivery). The title application is calling for a plate at 9000 pounds. This includes the truck and gear AND MOST TRAILERS. Notably, in my understanding camper trailers are not counted toward weight but a boat is. I carried 15,000 pound plates on the Silverado, ant that’s what I want on the Rivian (I actually need about 13,000 when I pull my boat). Rivian didn’t ask me about the weight and likely doesn’t understand the NC stuff, so I took the path of least resistance and files the paperwork they filled out. I will fix this with the NC DMV when I get the registration. Yes, it costs substantially more. My Silverado registration (excluding bundled property taxes) was on the order of $400 annually.

Interestingly if I understand the law correctly, the R1S won’t need this. It can pull a large boat trailer legally without weights tags as it’s not classified as a cargo carrying vehicle, like a truck.

I will try to dig up an old presentation from the NC Highway Patrol I found that covers this…

I just received a package that Rivian failed to register my vehicle and wanted me to do it instead. I went to the DMV and it was easy, but I still need to be reimbursed by Rivian for taxes and fees (about 2700 total).

I did need weighted tags, which were a little more expensive, but not to the order of 400+. But that is dependent on how much you plan to tow non RV if I recall when I researched. If you don't plan to tow at all then the weighted tag will only be 20-30 more than standard

Did you transfer your old plates? Would that change anything? I traded my old car(non weighted plates) and I recieved my packet last week, as well. Still waiting on the check though. My guide said you recieve it within 24hrs of delivery of the paperwork and supposedly overnighting the checks...

Like you, I was going to transfer non weighted plates before I found out. So I received new plates today at the DMV. I only received the package today so I was not expecting the check reimbursement just yet.

@OakCityJeff I think I just saw you driving down Holly Springs Road. Looking good! Would love the opportunity to say hello and take a look while I wait for my R1S! LMK if that might be possible…

I’d be interested. Hopefully I will have my truck in time for the fall leaf colors.

That would be my goal, hit it in maybe mid October and get the full effect of the turning leaves. Imagine the photo op of a line of Rivians shredding the dragon's tail with a backdrop of green, red, yellow, and orange.
