Personally, I’d just as soon us that tray for storage of small items - like sunglasses. There are plenty of other ways and places to charge my phone. I don’t need to waste useful space in the car for a phone charger that doesn’t even work. I will definitely being disconnecting it, IF I ever see my R1S.

The irony is that many of us might have to find a place for our phones on the dash anyway because of no Carplay/AA, so the wireless non-charging space will indeed free up for other uses.

Has anyone made progress on a 3D printed organizer insert to replace the charging pad? I thought that I had seen someone working on something like that. Maybe with additional cupholders built in?

The charging pad cavity is only ~3cm deep, not counting the wooden part above the rubber pad. Maybe a magnetic cup holder or something? I dunno.

Current Status:

I've found what I believe to be a good enough magnetic charging pad. It strong enough to grip onto my iPhone 13 Pro through the rubber map and actually charge while jiggling it around. It also has a USB-C female plug which is great to reduce cabling. It also doesn't seem to get hot at all.

I've also purchased a 12V to USB-C male DC-DC converter that outputs enough watts for the charging pad. (QC 3.0 variable) I currently have two posi-tap connectors on it and to tap into the cabling going to the POS charging pad.

Additionally, I've designed and I'm currently 3D printing a plate that the charging pad can sit in and can function as the floor below the stock rubber pad. It likely will be functional, but I'm not super thrilled with the design. Feedback on it is very welcome.

The plate will be printed in black PETG, not yellow/red. The blue part is a brim and is removed before install.

Nice work. So to confirm, this uses the wiring for the existing charging pad and leaves the USB-C ports in the center console untouched/free? Any chance of a dual charger setup?

Yes, this will tap into the power used by the POS pad and look 100% stock as it will not replace the rubber pad or need a modification to it. And eventually dual ... probably.

I want to be conservative on the wiring first. I also have the connector that the pad uses coming in, although it's designed to be soldered to a board so I'm not sure if I'll be able to use that.

So I tried to take the rubber mat off the center console to unplug the wireless charger as I saw in a few other threads. Surprisingly on mine, the double-sided tape was super strong and the cover to the wireless charger came right off with the rubber pad! So, here's a look at the TREMENDOUS number of coils in the thing... Bonus shot of the underside of the cover that mentions it's NFC. I'm too dumb to understand what to do with this knowledge, but I thought y'all might like to see it. I unplugged the coils so I could mount my MagSafe charger to the rubber cover without those coils heating it up.

Thanks for posting this. Looks like it's inspiring folks to come up with solutions that some 3D printing can solve. Hopefully, the Rivian community will share the .STL files for those that can use them.

Too bad Rivian didn't come up with a better solution; it's not like they didn't have the time. I bet a couple mechanical engineering undergrads could have come up with something pretty cool. Hmm...

The other cup holder is below that though correct. Seems like the space needed is there just not sure how its constructed or what is under the charge mat.

The bottom of the wireless charging cavity is layered. Removing those layers would require major surgery.

I'm just catching up with this issue. Rivian managed to over-engineer the Qi charging to the point of oblivion, hopefully they'll refine it over time, not one part of the design is good - positioning, charging or keeping the phone captive.

FWIW, I ran a test using a standard Apple Magsafe plugged into the left USB-C port inside the center console cubby, it turned in a very respectable 6.58W/1316Mamp. For context, that's better than the Model 3/Y Qi charger, and many aftermarket, so, assuming you're an apple family, a nice rubber tray with cut-outs and cable guides would be a nice, simple solution.
