This is what I don't get. A lot, and I mean A LOT of others are comparing this to the R1T and actually believe it's a better vehicle. I don't see how. I mean, for it to even reach the same mileage rating as a Large pack R1T is a $20k upgrade. The interior is nothing like that of a Rivian, the features a Rivian comes with the F-150 lacks even at the top end trim. I get that there are those loyal to Ford, but pound for pound, I cannot fathom how this is better than a R1T.

I have never liked Ford as a brand and not crazy about the look of F150 and agree with you that value wise, depending on what is important to you, you get more with pre March pricing of R1T. However there are things that I like about F150 more: 9+ KW AC/ 240V output. Shape of Fronk. The fact that you can flip up back seat and get that ginormous interior space, simpler suspension and theoretically cheaper Pro for those that can live without the niceties. With all that, I take Rivian with all it’s uncertainties if for nothing else, for not having to deal with dealers to make the purchase.

I agree...those three items are the big advantages for the Lightning for me as well. Perhaps my biggest dislike on the R1T is the inefficient rear seat storage space. A seat bottom that folds up against the seat back and a flat floor is MUCH more useful, ala Ridgeline & F150.

Ford downsides are the gigantic size and that a comparable Lightning is more expensive than a R1T, despite the Ford fans trying to tell you otherwise.

R1T can't handle a snow plow but it will get more tik tok hits when I go glamping.

That's not even what I was aiming at. Yes, I get that the Rivian and the F-150 Lightning target two different demographics and I am OK with that. It's what's being offered (even for the cost of the vehicles). I still cannot fathom how the F-150 is better. The R1T is so feature rich and out performs the '22 Lightning that the "math" doesn't add up for me.

Platinum Lightning is rather feature rich and close in (new) price to the R1T; features? unless you're talking about power tonneau options. I have a tonneau on my f-150 hybrid and never once have I wished I could open or close it automatically (and I am about as lazy as a person can be). R1T might be "faster" but some of us are not interested in racing from one stop light to the next.

I wouldn't say one is better than the other. Different tools for different purposes. I think commentators and consumers have a tendency to compare them (and the Chevy once more in known) just because there is no baseline other than ICE trucks.

Test drove a Lightning Pro this afternoon. For the price, it simply can't be beat - 230 mile range limitation aside. It's quick, quiet, and really poised for its size. An excellent all-around effort by Ford on the Lightning.

I could certainly live with it and do without the R1T's trick suspension and marginal performance increase.

Got a call from my Ford dealer today offering me a 22 Lightning Lariat with extended range pack. Did a lot of soul searching and turned it down. Spent a lot of time building a decision matrix and while the Lightning is a nice truck, it’s just not what I’m going for at this point. I’ve ridden in both, but in the end, Price, interior quality, size, wheels, and overall look drove me to cancel my Lightning order and just wait on Rivian…..couldn’t afford both, so it was nice in a way to be forced to make a decision.

Were there any "dealer markups?" You could've purchased the F150 and then immediately flipped it if there wasn't a [substantial] markup and that would help offset the cost of your R1T.

The Lightning Pro is the best value of any electric truck and it's not even close... including other Lightnings.

The XLT Lightning is a downright terrible deal when compared to the Pro. $13k extra for painted bumpers and an "upgrade" from vinyl to cloth seats. That's about it. There's probably $10k+ of PURE profit in the XLT. In the gas trucks, the XL (Pro equivalent) is only $3-4k cheaper than the XLT.

The Pro is priced as a loss leader / headline grabber, but for now, it's basically unobtanium... even compared to other vehicles that are hard to get (other Lightnings, R1T, etc.). They're making a few hundred of them for MY2022.

So, yeah, if you have an insanely early reservation and/or a good friend at a dealership that got you to the VERY front of their line (only the very first person in line at each dealership even got a chance to order a Pro), then it's an insane deal. But for the trims above the Pro, the value is not nearly as good and I'd go Rivian, myself. Pre-March pricing Rivians are a substantially better value than any Lightning but the Pro.

I was offered a Lightning Lariat order a few months ago. I keep thinking I probably should have done this... but I'm hoping I get a MY2023 Pro instead. But we'll see how Ford handles MY2023. They let a bunch of people cut to the front of the line and buy up all the Pros for MY2022, so it was probably naive of me to expect them NOT to do something scummy for MY2023 to screw over the early reservation holders who want Pros again, but we'll see.

My concern would be the local dealer and how much of a last minute ADM are they going to try and slap people with? so far we've seen one with a $63k market adjustment. These brick and mortar old school dealer are great and pulling the rug from under those who have waited long enough. Happens all the time now on any "new" model, Focus RS, RS6 Avant, M2CS, MK5 Zupra, etc...

No ADM and in hindsight maybe I should have bought as a temp vehicle until Rivian arrives. Couldn’t get past the Karma thing either……hoping that passing on the Lightning really makes someone’s day; someone that really wants it. I’d be stoked if that happened to me with Rivian.
