I do not think you read the referenced article. It says it is designed in a manner that when the hardware is available they can start using it without needing to redesign everything. It is not saying the hardware in the 400 volt architecture vehicles will be able to do 800 volts.Here is an article that Rivian said that the trucks were designed from the start to upgrade to 800 volts.
