Rivian has rail service directly to the plant in normal. They would load them on car carriers at the plant, be routed regionally and transported via car carrier to service centers when local.
Poppycock. Amazon/Blue Origin drone delivery is the way to go.

No way they are not sandbagging their projected 2022 delivery numbers!

I hope the ramp continues to go well and they don't get tripped up due to supplier issues!

They never committed to delivering any specific number, only produce. The market is primarily concerned with production, as delivery is a relative given once it's produced.
I would agree. Particularly if Rivian continues to get the customer's money before shipping the vehicle.

As long as this doesn't occur ...

I predict a ton of deliveries the next 3-4 weeks. Call me an optimist but Rivian is figuring it out. My guide gave me some good news yesterday and I got an email saying the wall charger is on its way. Truck will soon follow.......

Did you complete the 8-steps and pay for the vehicle already, which is why they started shipping wall charger? Or were you able to pay for the wall changer outside of the vehicle purchase?

I have not completed the 8 steps yet. Nor did I pay for the wall charger separately. Pba has been signed though.

So ... the thought is that Rivian is delaying shipping by car carriers directly to Service Centers so that they can:

1. Load R1Ts onto train cars at the plant to
2. To have more potential delays while the train car waits to get transferred to another train heading near a Service Center where
3. They get unloaded off of Rail Cars quickly (if car carriers are readily available locally) to
4. Load them onto car carriers to
5. Deliver them to Service Centers

To potentially save a few bucks on shipping while increasing potential delivery handling damage at the time your stock is tanking and every financial analyst and his brother wants to know how many customer deliveries have been made.

Interesting.
I seriously doubt they are doing this to save money. Right now, there is a major shortage of over-the-road truckers. Moving the vehicles by car trains is the most efficient means of moving a large number of vehicles over a distance. Auto trains usually are high priority movement on the rails, second only to intermodal trains. Hopefully, all these vehicles will be departing soon.

A few numbers to keep in mind… 25k vehicles produced this year. They’ve said 10k of those will be vans. Figure production really ramped up in March. That means 1,000 vans per month need to be produced, 1,500 R1 vehicles. So that should mean full lots at the factory so vehicles can be prepped for transport trucks and be sent to service centers.

And to the one comment above about these vehicles may not be complete, the R1T’s have travel wrap on the front. That means they’re ready to go.

Rivian will be slow to reveal if they iron out some of their supply issues, but it would not surprise me to see them exceed that 25k production number. Total guess, but I’d predict they make 30k vehicles this year.

I think I identified at least one R1T of each exterior color in the pictures. If that's the case, it seems exterior color choice has little effect on delivery timing.

Do you have any idea how long it takes to print a large map of the US, and throw a dart at it? Then, print a large list of preorder holders, and throw a dart at that? Then compile that information and compare it to the random trucks you've built to see who gets what? Logistical nightmare. No wonder trucks are sitting.

That's my best guess on how Rivian is deciding who gets what, and when...

Not just a few bucks, it's significantly cheaper and logistically more sensible to ship new vehicles by rail in bulk, which is why pretty much every major vehicle manufacturer does it that way. It would be almost impossible to ship thousands of vehicles by long haul truck in a reliable and cost effective manner, and as someone mentioned already, investors are way more interested in production numbers than deliveries so it's not like it's hurting their stock...I don't think it's reasonable to expect Rivian to spend resources shipping every vehicle immediately by truck just to shave a couple weeks off delivery because we're impatient.

Not saying it's the reason at all, but trains are also much more environmentally friendly than trucks for long distances. Cost, shortage of truckers, environmental impact, etc - I'd be shipping by train whenever possible if I was them.

Of course, I personally think these are just the normal amount that are at that stage of the delivery process. My guess is they slowed down production for a little bit to iron out some issue and have kicked it back into gear now.
