When the car runs up against brush or tree branch.

This is exactly what my FJ Cruiser looked like after a few well-vegetated trails, and exactly why I'm seriously considering a PPF for the R1T. It's not cheap but it offers basic protection from this kind of thing without making the car fugly and without repairing the clearcoat after every weekend jaunt.

I'm firmly in the camp that my R1T is a truck, not a museum piece, but I don't want it to look absolutely thrashed every time I take it out either.

6k wow, I was always curious what PPF cost and that just seems like way too much for a 80k vehicle. Maybe if I was into off roading or something where the paint might get damaged but other than that not sure.

I probably won't go full PPF this time so it'll end up less than $6k but seeing as though you're a fellow NJ resident you could use the sales tax benefit to pay for it. That's pretty much what I'm doing and depending on how long until I actually take delivery I may just say screw it and do full PPF.

It is anywhere from $4-7K for doing the entire vehicle in XPel PPF (some other PPF manufacturers can vary a bit).

That's why a lot of folks only do the front (hood, fenders, mirrors, maybe headlights). That's ~$1500-2K.

However, for those looking to do the matte (XPel Stealth), then you obviously have to do the entire vehicle unless you want some parts glossy and some parts matte. :p

For the R1T, I do notice there's an air flow gap where the tire can kick up debris to the lower door area. I'd probably put PPF there as well.

From the factory there is a protective film immediately behind the air flow gap. In addition, the gear tunnel doors have a protective film. I am assuming both areas have PPF.

For those complaining, how is this different than the original Rivian wraps that people were going gaga over?
It protects more than the wraps rivian had on.

Wow! Even $1500-2K is really high. I use a guy in Centennial/Aurora, CO (south of Denver) who's done every car I've owned in the last 12 yrs and he only charges ~$600 for hood, splash areas, mirrors, headlights, etc. In the interest of full disclosure, it's usually not the whole hood but only the first 12-15" from leading edge back. Still, he would likely do the whole hood for only about $100-150 more. And this is with top quality 3M materials.

Anyway, point of the story is to shop around and you can likely find other installers at better value. For me, some protection is a must...

I do love that whole car look in the satin finish - definitely unique!

This sort of thing is heavily region dependent and sometimes shop dependent from what I learned on the Telsa forums years ago.

Not quite this bad, but my 4R looks much the same. I'm debating how much PPF I'm going to do, but tempting to just do it all myself with pre-cut stuff that I can easily replace later. Won't look as good as a professional job, but will be cheaper in the long run.

I think that might be why. 3M is an inferior product for PPF (compared to XPel and some others).

I know I can definitely find one cheaper. My neighbor, even though I told him not to, kept trying to find the cheapest place for his new Model Y. It was about half the cost and quality of the film is noticeably different than mine.

For any of my vehicles, I am already expecting ~$2K.

But I get it 100%. It is not a cheap "modification" so I encourage people to get what they want to get, and determine price vs. quality vs. budget. Everyone is different.

I guess the "inferior" aspect is up for interpretation but you do you and drop the $$$.

I've had good luck with 3M and my installer so I'm inclined to spend a bit less...to each their own.

Best of luck...hope you get your truck soon! I'm probably a year or more out so lots of time to consider options.

To give folks a better feel for the difference, here are some side-by-side shots of two Launch Green R1Ts, one with Stealth, and one without. Also, two pics from the shop with a sample of Stealth applied to the hood. Sorry we didn't have direct sunlight for a better comparison, but Summer in Oregon isn't until July 23rd & 24th. Luckily, this year it falls on a weekend!
