First time I've posted here, but I've been lurking for a few months and learned a ton. Reserved an R1S in early Jan 2022 - wasn't on my radar till then, but we just got solar panels on our house and will be buying an EV soon. Also reserved a Lightning but was really psyched about the R1S and willing to wait till 2023 to get one. Not so much anymore after this massive price hike/bait and switch.

Here's the letter I just sent to [email protected]. I would encourage all reservation holders to send Rivian a letter with your own thoughts about the price increase and how it will impact your decision to buy/not buy a Rivian.

Rivian is going to have a LOT of cancellations after this huge price increase. Have you looked at the Rivian Owners Forum lately? If not you should. Lots of hardcore Rivian fans there who have had reservations for years are cancelling today. And most of those who are not cancelling are seriously considering cancelling, or holding out in hopes that Rivian will be forced to reverse this decision.

You absolutely should have honored your advertised prices for existing reservations. This shows poor business integrity and will drive customers away. Effectively raising prices 15-20+% is outrageous, when inflation is nowhere near that level. Suddenly making multiple standard features into $6000 options is ridiculous. Add this to the multiple delays and lack of communication and the remaining goodwill Rivian had is evaporating quickly.

The R1S that I reserved two months ago was a stretch, now at over $88K for the same configuration it is looking very overpriced. We are now looking much more seriously at other compelling options which are closer to $50K (Audi A4 Etron, Fisker Ocean, Hyundai Ioniq 5) as well as the Ford F150 Lightning which I also reserved a while back.

I hope you reconsider this massive price hike, at least for existing reservation holders. You are going to lose a lot of us if you do not reverse this decision. I'm not cancelling yet in the hopes that the backlash Rivian receives will force Rivan to reconsider this decision. But I was really close to cancelling this afternoon, and there is a near zero chance that we will actually go through with our order if the price increases are not reversed for reservation holders. I think you will find many if not most of your reservation holders are making the same calculation.

Thanks and good luck.

Much like what I sent, but I lacked a lot of the niceness.

agreed on that, they could release something more fair by giving each year you've held it a 33% discount on the new inflated 17% 2022+ price. so a 2021 pre-order like mine 12% higher, 2020 6% 2018-2019 locked in price...

@boredcleaner, great post I had the same idea. Respectfully contact Rivian preferably RJ directly and voice your feelings. I can't help but wonder who knew what and when regarding R1 pricing I would be surprised if this doesn't turn out litigious the way it is playing out.
I understand businesses need to raise prices from time to time but the way it is not affecting some buyers that just so happened to configure a certain way or live in a certain area than others that preordered in some cases earlier is wrong. This action may hurt the brand in ways they can't buy back with price hikes.

This 100%

I'm set to drive one tomorrow and unless they honor reservation holders with the original price or back WAY off these absurd price hikes, it will probably be the only time I drive one. However, I too haven't cancelled yet and won't until we see how this plays out. They did preorder holders quite dirty here and their stock is only going down in the short-term especially after March 10. It's already down 8.36% today plus the IPO lock ends in May. Poorly played yet again.

It might impact my ultimate buying decision, but I don't really get the point of being mad about it. Inflation is legit bad and only getting worse. And the world's supply chains just lost access to all of Russia, the airspace above Russian, and Ukraine. Prices will likely drop as they're able to produce in greater quantity. I'll just tweak my pre-order to wait another year if necessary.

My email response regarding the price increase. Been waiting 3 years for delivery and they raise the price by 22%. What about brand, culture. Not sure I trust Rivian anymore. Also bought maximum shares of IPO. Regretting both of these decisions.

I was/am annoyed enough by my wasted years of interest and excitement that I actually joined Twitter to express my disgust at the complete disregard to our community. On the bright side, now the whole twitter-verse can see my musings.

Can you please play Korn's K@#%! on loop? "Gotta test the Meridian."

Legit, can you ask when they learned of price hikes? Then ask what they paid for their Rivian, after employee discounts. And how long it took them to get delivery after reserving one as an employee...

The price increase, for me, makes it no longer a feasible option. 73600 up to 87600? 14000 pays for over 1 year of house payments, including tax and insurance, with money left over.

I'm livid to be honest. This was my only opportunity to get something nice that suits my family and needs, without completely blowing my budget. Some wonder why I'm not more green. Well green (money) don't grow on trees, and being green is an expensive endeavor, and not something I can afford at these prices.

I'm really beginning to regret buying $100k in shares.
