Another of our objectives for our recent trip was to see what kind of energy efficiency we would get when off road. Using the trip computer I got data from 5 trails:

R1T Off-Road Efficiency
TrailMileskWhAltitude StartAltitude EndGainmi/kWhNotes
Ophir Pass9.78.89800100002001.10
Half Alpine45.631.79400940001.44half fast, up to 12800
Old Hwy 1030.111.572005350-18502.62
Skyline South82.857.75200980046001.44
Skyline North27.75.488006400-24005.13fast
total195.9115.15501.70

The overall average implies a range of about 210 off-road miles (though it would be foolish to push it that far). For the entire trip, 2701 miles (including 196 off-road), 1404 kWh, 1.92 miles/kWh: not bad for AT tires at 80 mph most of the time.

Great data! Thank you for taking the time to share.
Pretty good efficiency considering ?

I'm looking forward to running the Oregon end of the Transamerican trail soon: delivery in November if all goes well!

Holy flurking shnit this is probably more than 2x better than what I would have expected.

I'm so used to Rubicons popping their heads up and being like, "So I just got 5.1 mpg on that run" that I've been assuming > 1 mi/kWh as a rule for neutral to negative elevation gains.

I can't wait for more data to pour in but this puts a ton of overlanding into play I think I Was discounting at face value.

Probably not an issue. I wasn't going fast enough that the aero drag mattered much. Nor was I going so slowly that the non-propulsion loads dominate. My average for the whole set of trails was probably 20 mph or so.

Nice to see. My 4Runner gets something like 7-10 mpg on the trails and 15-20 mpg on the road/highway.

Great info are these hard trails? like a lot of slow crawling that need full motor torque? or more back roads?

Thank for sharing this info. I've been lurking for a long time (preordered early 2020), but your post put me over the edge to finally sign up!

To my point: Do you have any data you can share on the cargo weight and/or total vehicle weight in these scenarios? I'm trying to gauge how comparable this would be for my R1S once it’s fully decked out for overlanding with RTT and other equipment + 4 ppl.

Great info! I still don’t have my R1T, but have done a little off-roading with a few now, and range off-road far exceeds my expectations.
