My Limestone OC R1S with: chrome-delete/powder-coated 21s, CarPlay screen/hi-def dashcam and misc. accessories

Hi All,

It's been over two years and I finally got my delivery last week. I had plenty of time to lurk around this forum as I waited for the car and there were a few things I knew I wanted to address for my build based on everyone's feedback.

1) I knew I wanted the chrome-delete look.
i. So I went to Static Coatings of Clifton, NJ to powder-coat my 21s in glossy black - https://www.staticcoatings.com/
ii. I bought 4 center caps with yellow emblems from Abstract Ocean, but since they were dark gray, I had to spray paint them glossy black on the outside, and then I used permanent markers to fill out the inside of the yellow emblems - https://abstractocean.com/products/wheel-center-caps-for-r1t-r1s

vi. Plastidipped the back bumper silver since Brain Exploder only had the chrome delete decals for R1T

2) This is my wife's daily driver so I knew CarPlay was a non-negotiable. She's very much a plug-n-play can't make it too complicated for her. I also saw how even though there is drive cam, it looks like the front and rear camera resolutions are not good enough to note the opposing car license plates. So:
i. I found a CarPlay screen/2.5K front 1080p rear dash cam combo from Ottocast. It's a company I've used in the past. I've subsequently replaced it with a much better and elegant solution in the EV Sportline CarPlay Device (replaced 12/24/2023) https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...e-carplay-display-hidden-wires-install.22622/

iv. Needed a way to power both the CarPlay screen / dash-cam combo and magsafe phone charger. I had originally ordered the Scosche OBD-ii USB solution, but realized it doesn't have a shut-off option, so it would stay on with the dedicated power. I was worried about draining the 12v battery needlessly, so I ordered a Garmin OBD - USB adapter which has a 10 minute shut-down after the car sleeps. It does take about 30 minutes after the car locks to engage (probably because it takes a good 20 minutes for the car to really go to sleep). The only issue is that when I charge the car, it doesn't go to sleep so the screen stays on. I am looking to do a fuse tap to see if it works better. Is your wife happy with ingress / egress? I needed the running boards before mi wife was happy as a passenger OR driver.

She’s ok with it at 5’7. We had a power sidestep with the Lincoln Navigator and it was pretty convenient. But the R1S is not quite as tall and it’s passable. It’s been a discussion item for when I have my mom with us who’s 5’2 and in her late 80s, but it’s less frequent so may not justify the expenditure. My 8 year old loves the climb to the 3rd row.

I’ve seen one other white one in town and gray one in Woodcliff Lake so a few more showing up in this area ?

Sweet! Nice pic!

By the way, I’m happiest with the way the powder-coating turned out. At $600 for the 4 wheels, it turned out fantastic and looks factory. It was a lot less than getting the black 22s. Without the aero covers the yellow calipers really jump out.

Have you tried putting the covers back on just to see what it looks like now after the powder coating? I would love to see pictures if you do.

I know there is a big debate regarding the benefit of the covers, but Rivian didn't make them because they look good. Aerodynamic resistance increases exponentially with speed, so if you don't see an impact with them off, it is probably because you are not driving fast enough. At 80 mph, I would be shocked if they didn't measurably improve range.

I know this is only one data point (and also not the topic of this post), but for others that are curious: a user on /r/Rivian found that the difference was negligible at ~65 mph. As you say, they may not have gotten the same results at 80 mph, but at least it's not so bad that you take a huge hit for everyday driving.

So yellow compasses on the center caps were colored with a yellow Sharpie? Did I read that correctly? Did you do the same with the valve stem caps?

I was going to like these pictures until I saw Michael Bubble on the stereo. ??

Nice solution to the Carplay and cam problems, but this is a 2023 vehicle!... ugh
