Just got my R1T delivered in Chicagoland yesterday. I am a March pre order holder. This was a shop truck. VIN 194XX. Collecting thoughts over the next few weeks. But the biggest thing is the smell. Does any one else's truck have a slight burnt smell from the hvac ? It's not the regular nice nee car smell, but a bit harsher. Anyone else have this issue?

Resistive heating? Smells like a new toaster?

Nope, never had any smell at all from the hvac.

Yes I think that's the closest analog. It's new car with a tinge of something else. It's definitely noticeable vs the normal new car smell. Going to try and run the heater on high tomorrow for a while. Haven't had the time to do a lot of driving on it yet.

I know, right? I'm tempted to just hop in and drive right now - just for fun - to see if I can reproduce that smell. Any excuse to drive my R1T ... But I'm pretty sure it's just the wire burning off the initial layer of oxidation, like all resistive heating elements. If so, that goes away after a few drives.

It's been a while since I lived there, but if I recall correctly it's still cold in Chicago this time of year?

VIN 194XX.
Side question...do you have the frunk 12V? There's a thread with a bunch of folks in the 18xxx realm that did get it and my truck is 199xx (yet to be delivered).

Edit: Just saw you responded in the other thread. Yay, glad to see it's still present!

Thats exactly what i should have done instead of working! Tomorrow I have a big day planned.

Yep! Its chilly here now and the heat was needed. I am going to give it a good run tomorrow and see if I can burn it off.

Well I definitely think its the resistive heater, as its slowly disspating as i use the heater more. Its wierd because other people dont seem to notice it as strongly as I do. So many my noise is just extremely sensitive to this specific smell.

Outside of this, I am loving this truck. Got to drive it pretty much all day today.

I noticed it as well but it has definitely dissipated as I have used it throughout the last few days. Fresh elements need to be broken in it seems!

Oh, there is an array of Rivian smells to be had! Spray the windshield washer fluid and let us know your thoughts on that ?

And come see daddy when you run low ?

New car smell and heater smell was kind of bad for a month or 2. It's completely gone now. Took a few years for Mazda.

The "vegan" vinyl interior had a little bit of a weird smell when I first got the truck, but it dissipated pretty quickly. Haven't really used the heater much, but hopefully whatever it is for you clears quickly after a few drives.
