I think it would be absurd to charge customers for something as basic as temporary graphics and sound changes for a holiday. While the Halloween mode was neat, it brought absolutely nothing to the table that would be worth paying for, especially given its time-limited nature.
Well, the RGB ambient lighting could have been permanent.

Even so, the point is that it would be absolutely absurd to pay these prices for the R1 vehicles and then have to pay even more for basic things like changing sounds or interior ambient lighting. It's just as ridiculous as BMW trying to place heated seats behind a subscription service.

In almost all circumstances subscription/pay to unlock features in vehicles are worse for the consumer. Companies are trying to switch to this model because it can increase profits without having to provide an actual benefit to their customers.

The subscription thing is not a bad concept. If you live in the south, maybe you only care about heated seats for part of the year. Or only want autopilot on a long road trip.

Ownership means different things to different people. Traditional logic is that you buy the thing. This is more like buying into the platform. The manufacturer could save money by not having different builds, BOMs, changeovers. The consumer only pays for what they want when they want it and assigns high value to the platform for the convenience/knowledge that all the features are available. No searching for the model with just the right options. No car sales people.

And I would be happy to pay for different graphics and sounds periodically, just like the zillion gamers who have buy in game upgrades.

I’m against any recurring subscriptions, but would be open to “in app purchases” (one time), such as $10 for the owl horn.

Almost everyone charges a monthly fee after a year for advanced features. Rivian has talked about that for things like hotspot. I think they could roll sound and RGB lighting controls into that package.

I still don’t know what nature sounds people were expecting for Christmas. Halloween was a better holiday for those party tricks.

Honestly, I was hoping rivian gave us a Christmas update, but it seems that not gotta happen
Rivian doesn't want their themes to be the excuse someone uses to leave their family and hang out inside their truck during the holiday.
