Valve Stem/TPMS Sheared Off!

Had my first flat on 21s early this week. Glad I had a compressor and working spare. Picked up a roofing nail (after dodging that bullet for two years in a new neighborhood).

Anyway, the chaps at DiscountTire were kind enough to repair the tire FOR FREE!

I replaced the tire at home for practice and to make sure all the gear was there. Got a nice plastic splinter under my nail from the plastic tray - watch yourselves.

But, I just got to putting the tire back in the spare tire holder, put the air hose on it just to check presser, and with just enough pressure to put the hose on, the valve stem housing completely sheared off!

What?!

I’m thinking thinking they damaged it. But I’m sure they’ll say it was defective. And it has been laying flat, stem up, for 4 days in the bed.

Is this a valve stem or is this the TPMS shaft?

Looks like the stem broke and the core is in it. I think the tpms sensor is inside the wheel and held in place with a fastener.

I always keep emergency valve stems in my jeep for off-road. Maybe I’ll start keeping them in all my vehicles.

It's solid metal, I've never had another vehicle with solid metal stems, they've all been rubber. Not even sure what other manufacturers use solid stems. Could be that they bent or weakened it with their inflator because they weren't careful with it.

It seems to me like the stem is fairly recessed in the rim too. So I'm not sure how it would have even gotten damaged. Perhaps it was just a bad casting and failed.

Well I don’t recall ever having that type of valve stem. I’ve knocked off 2 rubber ones and both broke instead of pulling out. I pushed what was left inside the wheel and then put in an emergency stem. I can’t say for sure how Rivian is set up, but I would try removing the nut and pushing the stem into the wheel. Doing this might ruin the tpms sensor I don’t know.?‍

To conclude, the valve stem part is field replaceable and Discount Tire was able to replace it separate from the TPMS.

They replaced it for free. Gave a couple more tours of the R1T.
