Yeah we're aware ... They caused years of delays and cost Rivian a lot of money when they had to pivot to build the R2 in Normal instead.
I think all the lawsuits are over now, and the opposition lost. Not sure they can do anything at this point except for putting up signs. Rivian was never really the problem anyway, it was the state and local government who made the zoning changes.
NIMBY is a powerful force. Of course if we let the general population control all of the decisions, nothing would ever be built. On a personal level I’m for solar panels and wind turbines, but against data centers.
I think the Georgia plant will be good for Rivian, US auto sales/exports, the local economy, and EVs in general.
The NIMBYs will almost always shut up with passage of time—once fear of newness/change subsides and when they enjoy tangible economic benefits.
What negative impact Rivian will have is far less threatening than the AI data centers springing up around the country, with huge power demands the existing grid isn’t yet ready for… at the same time with an administration that is roadblocking every single renewable energy effort that could alleviate that power shortage and stabilize price. Those who oppose Rivian are misinformed and being manipulated. Same goes for opposition of any renewable energy projects. There are fracking operations that are poisoning groundwater deposits. The same groundwater that people use and grow/raise food with. Yet, it rarely gets coverage.
