Is it proper to tip your initial delivery driver when receiving your R1T or R1S? Purely a theoretical question at this point for many of us but after living in the tip capital of the world for >20 years (Las Vegas) I now find myself tipping in situations others find odd.

While I've never lived in Las Vegas, I find myself doing the same. I like to phrase it as, "Let me buy your lunch." And then I make the tip enough for dinner.

If they went somehow above and beyond, possibly?

otherwise, tipping someone who’s just done their job seems odd in (most) situations.

Yet another reason I like traveling in Japan; no tipping.

I didn’t tip my Rivian delivery people. I generally don’t tip employees of businesses that I know pay their staff well. I always tip wait staff because I know they’re likely only making minimum wage (if that) and count on the tip income. I used to regularly tip housekeeping every night I stayed in a hotel, but once COVID hit and hotels decided to use that as an excuse to no longer provide daily housekeeping service (but didn’t lower their room rates) I quit tipping because I figure the one time they cleaned my room before I checked into it is included (or should be) in their wages.

I will make the decision to tip based on the level of wage of the person providing the service and the quality of service.

Given the Mad Max delivery scenarios that people have been describing where their R1Ts have been arriving with delivery damage, I might tip my driver if he/she gets my R1T to me in pristine condition as that apparently is harder than it looks.

I run a good size maple syrup operation as a side business and tipped them a quart of maple syrup. Some how seems less demeaning than money. Maybe get something locally made that you enjoy and share that with them. It's a win win for small business and an employee.

( I own 2 small businesses so I think about this a lot)

I asked my friend who works as a delivery specialist - they aren't supposed to accept gratuities.

If it's a Rivian employee? No, absolutely not.

If it's from a transport company and they're doing a good job? Yeah, a $20.

Automakers charge a separate D&H fee for a reason. So no tip necessary... Unless they go above and beyond in some way. After all, that's what tipping is traditionally for -- service above and beyond normal. It was never meant to be a societal crutch to fill out wages of common workers. Yet here we are.

I tipped “buy lunch on your way back” and I would not accept no as an answer. Delivery specialist spent near 2 hours with me. On a Saturday. And had a 3 hour ride back. He definitely deserved it IMO
Yeah, that would deserve a tip. Lunch seems appropriate... Hopefully a nice lunch.
