Same problem gate shows closed but is open and won't latch. Doing the trick with holding it closed and pressing the open button worked once but stopped working. Only three weeks old. So frustrating. Clearly bad design. Also no scheduled service date yet.

Through a friend of a friend I heard about the over torqued bolt problem. I took that side trim off the bed and loosened the bolts holding the electronically activated switch a little bit (quarter turn). This solved the problem for me. I think it works better than original because I don't have to slam the gate to get it to register as closed (at least so far).

Since day 1 I had an issue where I had warning tailgate was open when it wasn't when I would go uphill. I scheduled service for this wayyy out as while annoying wasn't urgent. Now I have a tailgate that won't close. Unacceptable. I live in the city and can't drive with tailgate hanging open. I have called service to accelerate. We will see. Anyone else have this issue? I have had car for only a couple ofweeks and was really hoping I woudnt have big issues. Super frustrating.
I’m on my second round with the tailgate issue. I have mobile coming this week. I had to slam it shut and that worked but I’m afraid to open the tailgate until service gets here.

I just had this issue happen and it on the passenger side only. You can hear the mechanics working after pressing the button like stuck.

So I took apart the bed liner and loosen the bolts holding the latches. Problem solved, working fine now. BTW my service appointment to resolve was July 17. 5 months out.

I just had this issue show up yesterday. My wife was using the truck and had opened the tailgate to put her skis in the bed. Then it wouldn’t close.

it showed a “Not working” warning for the tailgate in the dash.

I was finally able to slam it closed, but it only feels like it’s latched on the passenger side.

I can pull slight on the drivers side of the tailgate and the bed lights come on.

Also when I open it I can still hear a motor running for a few seconds after the tailgate is fully open. I think that’s new.

I’m wary of opening the tailgate now because if I can’t get it shut again I also can’t close my garage door when the truck is parked.

I called support and have a service appointment 3 weeks out.

I already have a mobile appointment for Monday to do the 7500 mile service but they told me this couldn’t be added to that, I had to go to a service center.

That will be my 5th service center visit since I got this truck in June.

Rivian pulled a Tesla and used a bunch of really cheap parts, everywhere. The latch is just one of many. It’s one that we can observe with our own eyes, but there are plenty more that are hidden from you. I would ever own this vehicle outside of warranty. Even within warranty I’m considering suing for fraud; it’s not a warranty if it takes three or more months to get an appointment. A truck with an unreliable tailgate does not truck. I am counting the days until I own a Scout or other e-truck (CT excepted).

Rivian fills a niche for me -- a company willing to bet its whole existence on an American EV future.

Our Rivians do things no other vehicle will do at this level, combining hauling; collision avoidance; and collision protection.

I think we've had at least an average amount of problems with our Rivians. We've found Rivian to have many overly rigid procedures, but we've also met many many kind and pleasant Rivian representatives who do their best every day.

@ThirteenElectrics, you're "considering suing," and of course you should do what you think best.

I'm impressed by the difficulty of obtaining thousands of highly reliable parts, for a new and low-volume manufacturer, in the middle of a global pandemic and unprecedented disruption of everyone's supply chain.

That's one of several reasons I'm inclined to give Rivian a lot of grace here.

***

It helps that our family doesn't ever have to be scared about getting its basic needs met, and we have a reliable backup vehicle. I recognize that other Rivian owners may be in a very different situation.

Best to all!
