Side Mirrors will not return to saved position

Both my driver and passenger side mirrors will not return to their saved position. It started happening first when I would tilt the mirrors in reverse and then they would not return to the saved profile position. I turned that off but now when the car goes to sleep they return to some sort of default position. So...everytime I start a drive now, I have to readjust the mirrors...press save. Then when I park and come back out I have to do it all over again.

Do you have any suggestions to try? I asked service when I had it in last but, while they lubricated the mirror assemblies so the mirrors move smoother now....it didn't fix it not being able to return to the saved profile position.

It is happening on both my profile and my wife's profile.

Have you tried restarting the infotainment system? That often resolves little glitches like this.

I have the same problem on my 2026 Gen2 R1S. Multiple hard and soft resets as well as mobile service visit failed. Rivian replaced passenger side and it is working fine but now need to replace the driver's side. It must be done at the service center due to the calibration process so it's taking me a while to get back over there. It is a pain and perhaps safety hazard to have to reset it almost every time.

Have you tried restarting the infotainment system? That often resolves little glitches like this.

I have done both the infotainment reset and the hard reset. No bueno.

It is nice to hear I am not alone. Mine is a 2025 also.

Edschwartz1 - How did you get them to replace the mirror? I reported the problem but, all they did was lubricate the guide pins behind the mirror.

When I reported it...I was thinking they just might need to calibrate both mirrors...not even necessarily replace them.

Rivian apparantly thinks that encoders on stepper motors are a luxury too expensive to use. So things that "adjust themselves" tend to lose position coordination between software and hardware and do this crap. Such a terrible decision, but not out of character for a company that is so software forward.

I've disabled everything automatic that I can, and am far less pissed off at the truck than I used to be. Wish I could say the same for the HVAC vents.

You can "poor man calibrate" these devices by running them from one extreme position to another 2-3 times in both axes. This realigns the software and hardware regarding position. If there is a mechanical issue with the device, the calibration won't last long though.

First the mobile tech came out to attempt reboot, recalibrate, etc. then said needed to be replaced. So the replaced passenger side but couldn't get the part in time to replace driver side. I am hoping to get it back there soon for that but Houston service center is not super easy to work with. I live four hours away from service center.

My 2025 R1T randomly will not tilt the mirrors to my preset conditions about 50% of the time. Since I back into my garage, I need to see my fender wells. If the mirrors don’t tilt, I have to shift to park, go to “access”, scroll down to “mirror tilt”, hit “customize” twice, then they will tilt to my preset settings. I’ve done both resets with no change. This problem only came on after 6 months. I have an appointment at the service center in two weeks.

I tried your “poor man calibration” and it seems to have worked. It’s only been several days but the driver side mirror has stayed in the position I saved. Thanks for your suggestion.

@riviandac glad it worked for you.

I've had these features in other vehicles (seats, mirrors, etc) and never fought them like this. Either those manufacturers had encoders for positional feedback, or they had stronger motors that didn't lose position due to mechanical reasons.

I have to do the poor man's calibration on the driver's side HVAC vent about 4 times a week. It's never right.
