No more anger for me toward Rivian, but after a long wait and the fact that they do not have a good plan to deliver vehicles in my area, I have decided to get a Model 3 and an inexpensive ICE truck for hardware store and hunting trips.... I am comfortable with this and I am not mad at Rivian.... Here is why I think it is the right decision for me; note that I am not saying it is right for everyone....

1- The M3 will cost <$40K since I will get it in time to qualify for the full tax credit.. I will be a truck for about $10K so even with both I will be at <$50K compared to $75K for the Rivian
2- The operating cost for a daily driver will be much less.
3- The charging network is awesome... My wife already has a model Y
4- Tesla is stable and established... I tend to keep vehicle a long time so long term viability is important...

Are you planning on keeping your Rivian reservation or just here to announce your departure?

Keeping out for now. Honestly as much as I hate when others do this, I might flip it if the market is right.
Not announcing departure per se but this is a discussion board to discuss rivian related issues. Specifically this is the competition forum.

Why are you so worried about my feelings? Did you buy stock in my feelings before they went down?

Best of luck to you, nothing wrong with a Tesla although I wouldn't want a model 3 personally.

It will be a great daily driver. Maybe not as fun as some but more practical.

Having owned both Model 3 an Y, in my opinion its a fun car. Other than the fact that its was chore to wrap my 6-4 frame into the seats, it was a blast to drive. Much prefer that to the Model Y, which I find boring, but don’t tell that to my wife.

And don‘t feel bad about your decision. While waiting for my R1T, I was minutes away from purchasing a Ford Ranger to do my truck runs. You should check out the Hyundai Santa Cruz. It’s a nifty little truck, if you can afford it and should be easy to unload if/when you decide to get a Rivian.

makes no sense to go with the Maytag washer instead of a Lightning if you're frustrated with Rivian.

I love my Model 3, you’ll be happy with yours.
Good strategy.

I think you made a great choice. I have an early built 2018 Model 3 for almost 5 years (no major issues) and a recently delivered R1S (also very early built in 09/22 VIN 8XX). Don't get me wrong, I love my new R1S, but it costs more than double (2.5 times?) electricity for the same distance compared to my model 3. Now I am struggling to pick which car when I go for longer rides by myself only. Plus, I believe the quality of future R1 vehicles will be much better (mine has some panel gaps and misalignments, although adjusted but still not perfect), so not a bad idea to wait and see IMO. But I do have one issue with driving model 3 at night (low height sedan in general) that the headlights of other vehicles, now mostly SUV or trucks, are very bright and shoot directly into my eyes.

Similar to the Ford Lightning trying to flip an R1T is not a profit making process anymore. Resale prices have started to level off.

Nothing wrong with buying another car after making a deposit on the Rivian. Its a temporary situation that will be undone when the R1T arrives. ;)

It’s a nice solution and basically what we had for the last 6 years only we had a 2013 Model S, a 2004 Tundra Double Cab and a Van/Highlander. Your experience will be better with the longer range of the 3 and the Y but for us we just weren’t driving the S that much due to the “limited” range. Yes the Supercharger network is great but the real world range on our S was down to ~150-170mi and the additional stops would just be an annoyance so we were opting for the Highlander on any longer trips.

After buying the R1T we sold the S and the Tundra to become a 2 car family for the first time in 12 years. So far we have zero regrets with the additional range on the Rivian. We do have a ski trip planned for March this year and are still debating whether we trust the charging infrastructure on I70 to Denver enough to take the Rivian. The comments on PlugShare do not inspire any confidence so I’m pretty sure it will be the Highlander for that trip. If the Superchargers were an option for us I wouldn’t have any concerns.
