I’d did search and didn’t find a post directly addressing this question.
In prep for the arrival of my R2 I sold my beloved R1T to Carvana. They will pick it up in a couple days.

Other than the obvious items such as removing personal items and canceling the insurance policy, what are the considerations for a software based vehicle that has accrued so much personal data.

Here is what I recall doing when I recently sold my R1S:
  • Remove personal items, accessories you want to keep, etc. Don't forget insurance, registration, and HOV passes that you probably left in the car until the last minute.
  • Check buyer's ID
  • Make sure the buyer hands you a check (for private buyers, we go to their bank and have a teller write a cashier's check)
  • I assume they'll want you to sign a Bill of Sale and the Title (right after you get the check)
  • Be sure to include any fobs, wristbands and key cards
  • Remove license plates, if your state requires that
  • Reset car to factory settings (only once you are sure they are really going to take it!). That doesn't quite remove everything, but the next step does.
  • Remove car from online account. Note that Rivian will automatically prorate back your Connect+ fee (at least if you are an annual subscriber; I dunno about monthly)
  • Fill out Report of Sale form, if your state requires that
  • Cancel insurance
  • Take down any "for sale" ads
And while this doesn't apply to the OP, it might be helpful to someone else: I almost always sell my vehicles privately, but this was the first time I sold to a buyer that was getting a loan through his bank. My wife's name was also on the title, and she was going to be out of town for the sale (partly on purpose, she hates being part of this sort of thing) so I had her sign the Title and Bill of Sale ahead of time to legally release her interest in the vehicle. That's all my state requires...but the buyer's bank later said that they wanted to us to release interest in front of a notary. My wife had to go through an online notary process on her cell phone while she was camping at the beach. It worked out, but she sure the heck was not happy about it (especially since the bank misspelled her name and got her phone number wrong, so she had to go through the process three times).

You might want to add removing the vehicle from any EV charging accounts.... I know a couple forum members here have commented on forgetting to do that and then getting money withdrawn when the new owner used a public charger.

Thanks. That is all good info. I hadn’t thought that Carvana would hand over a check. I have little to no experience with selling a car. In fact, I still have my previous vehicle prior to the R1T which is a 2004 Tundra.

I've never sold to an online service, so I don't know exactly how they handle payment...and it may vary by service and conditions (i.e. if there is a loan). So don't take my word for it. But do find out what Carvana does and make sure they do it!

Good luck.

Unregister your vehicle with electronic tags for bridge fares etc. I sold a car in the Bay Area and received three bridge toll charges as the license plate was recorded on the passages and my account was billed after I had sold the vehicle.
