Maybe it was one of those ICE vehicle owners who always claims "EV's will never work for them" because they "drive 800 miles non-stop every day". I always imagine they're the ones wearing astronaut diapers. 🙄🙄🤦

Edit: Like this person. 🤪

What do you expect? The love interest is described as "ruggedly handsome astronaut pilot."

I would pay any amount of money to not need an ADA space, but unless my son miraculously starts walking without assistance, that's not going to change for me. So it pisses me off considerably to routinely see people abuse ADA parking.

My son has limited mobility and needs a wheelchair to move around. The struggle of finding ADA parking in a standard parking lot is frustrating, much less while charging. Wrestling my son out of the car and into his wheelchair in a standard 9 or 10 foot wide parking space is a major challenge. So I appreciate the extra efforts made to provide/reserve ADA spaces to make this task easier.

Life is hard enough to struggle with the challenges a disability presents, I certainly don't need asshole drivers making it even more complicated than it needs to be. The unfortunate truth is people are rude and selfish and that's not going to change. All I can do is piss and moan about it to hopefully bring more aware to the issue.

Diaper could have accidentally fallen out of the vehicle and gone unnoticed, or quickly forgotten about after fighting to get an angry child re-dressed.

Maybe they were trying to use a different cabinet from the others so there was no power sharing? I don’t see a problem with that especially if they are staying with the vehicle and willing to move if someone that needs an ADA spot arrives in the 25 minutes they are there. “Use last” is not the same as “ADA only”. And the diaper thing - who knows, but it sounds like circumstantial evidence only at this point.

You make fair points. In fact the spot they selected put them in a balanced power situation with the spot I was in so that theory doesn’t hold much water. The problem is they weren’t at their vehicle to know if somebody that needed the ADA spot arrived while they were there.
The diaper is circumstantial, sure, but 10 minutes ago no diaper, now they’re there with child seat and diaper in parking lot seems pretty likely it was them.

You admitted a few things... they weren't there at the vehicle, so you have no idea if infact they did need the use of an ADA "accessible" spot.. Second, you didn't see them throw the diaper. You also didn't hang around to verify your assumptions.

Also, it sounds like this isn't even a legal ADA spot, just one created as a courtesy. If you are waiting for the human race to recover from it's downward spiral, I don't know what to tell you. I would just concentrate on being the best person you can be...

It absolutely is a legal ADA space. There is clear signage that states the spot should be used last. Since it is both an ADA and EV Charging spot they have chosen not to make it ADA permit required but I know (from having been there) they chose to park there while multiple other functioning spots were available. I also didn’t assume anything. They did not have a handicap placard or license plate. Those are the facts presented. It is about common decency and respect. Is it the end of the world, no. But I imagine lots of the RAN stations have similar signage and expectations and so I wanted to draw awareness to it.

Quite possible. I honestly am more disheartened by the use of the spot. The diaper is just one of those things. It’s like dog owners that somehow manage to pickup and bag their dog poop but then throw the bag on the ground.

I really like seeing the ADA placard on charging sites like that - it's like ADA rooms in hotels. Not making it illegal for you to use the charging station IF ALL OTHERS ARE FULL, but asking you to use a different station if there are others available.

People abusing their (or their parents/grandparents) ADA placards is one of my major annoyances. I walked into our local Target the other day and was astounded that not a single ADA spot was occupied - and then I noticed the police cruiser parked on the sidewalk at the end of the store. Apparently that was enough to discourage the abuse (while he was there).

Keep in mind , there are no firm standards on accessible ADA charging spaces, merely guidelines. Although not mandatory, it is nice to see attempts at charing stations to address this issue for those of us that live with the unfortunate circumstance of a disability.

The guideline shown below was developed by the U.S. Access Board in cooperation with DOJ and DOT. It does not provide provisions for fines, since these spaces are recommended, not mandatory. This makes them largely un policeable for the most part. I would expect abuse of this to be very common until it becomes mandatory. The standard does state that "Use the International Symbol of Accessibility only where spaces are reserved exclusively for people with disabilities", but it does not clarify beyond that if there are fines.

Personally I think the policy of "use this stall last" is fine. Let's face it, charging times are not terrible and will hopefully get better. I am accustomed to finding a way to work around challenges like this everyday, so some asshole is certainly not going to stop me from doing what I need to do.

Just be courteous and move if a disabled person needs the space. Life is hard enough for some of us and we have to make the best of it everyday regardless of what kind of crap the world throws at us.
