I'm already planning on a Turo in summer 2027 while waiting for MY28. Newly-licensed teen can't drive it but will get my old car to use.

I'm not sure I trust JD Power as they seem to get a lot of data directly from dealerships. Seems like it would be easy to manipulate those numbers. I trust Consumer Reports more. There reliability scores look much different than JD Powers. Not sure if this link will work sense you have to be a member so see a lot of their data. Here is data vs. anecdotal reports...there are many more reliable choice for a 3 years-in-service vehicle than a Tesla.![]()
They do not get data from dealerships. It comes from vehicle owners in the general population. CR data comes only from subscribers. The characteristics of the two samples are not the same and the survey questions are different, but both methodologies are proper.I'm not sure I trust JD Power as they seem to get a lot of data directly from dealerships. One of the best low cost AWD vehicle (since your location is Chicago), is the Subaru Crosstrek. It costs about the same as Civic and Corolla, and has high safety ratings.I have a teen who's starting summer job and need a car by June. Not sure when our R2's will be delivered so considering other options.
- Should I lease something for a month (I bet it's more than that) wait for R2
- Buy an IC car outright? options are Honda Passport or Pilot
2nd most important thing is Cost - Total cost of ownership.
Will Honda Pilot be cheaper or expensive, say if we own it for 5 years vs R2
Thanks
Absolutely! Had this one back in Michigan as my winter car/grocery-getter and it was bullet proof and incredible in the snow with their unique AWD system. Very high on CR ratings. One of the best low cost AWD vehicle (since your location is Chicago), is the Subaru Crosstrek. It costs about the same as Civic and Corolla, and has high safety ratings.
I would suggest leasing something else (EV for sure) for the next two or three years, and get them an R3 when they come out.I have a teen who's starting summer job and need a car by June. Not sure when our R2's will be delivered so considering other options.

As EV owner since 2018, Tesla and Rivian, when you take into account the total ownership costs (purchase price, insurance, operational and depreciation), its not clear that EV is cheaper over 5 years, especially if there is an accident involved....reason I was asking about Total cost is wife want's IC car, I am convincing her over 5+ years total cost will be cheaper on EV's.
I have R1S (she drives and like it too) but she's weary of EV's esp. all the troubles she heard from other parents at work/neighbors with their telsa's in Winters and going to visit kids at UIUC/UW Madison etc and them running out of charge halfway through.
