Hello all,

I've started the process of shopping for bed racks capable of supporting a future collapsible hardshell tent and have noticed most of fhe aftermarket bed racks have a weight capacity of around 160-200 lbs.
Do I need a specific bed rack to be able to carry the weight of 2 adults and the tent system itself?

The racks should have 2 load ratings - static and dynamic. The OE racks from Rivian are more than capable of supporting an RTT and 3 people (from experience). My RTT alone is about 120lbs.

There are several elevated racks that are more than capable and are generally designed for exactly this application. Which are you looking at?

Yeah, I briefly looked up static/dynamic load ratings, but thought the static rating was the simple downward weight rating which, in my mind would include the tent itself and the weight of the people in the tent, and dynamic being the weight of the tent system as it is when the vehicle is moving.

I'm not an engineer so this is a mere guess on my part.

Here's one example:

They state 220lbs, but not if it's while in motion - that's annoying.

The Rivian OEM bars support 250 while moving, and a lot more when stationary. I know they're pricey, but probably worth it in the long run. You can often find used ones pretty cheap.

@JPK think I saw your truck at REI yesterday. Got me searching Xtrusion and found this thread. Great looking setup!

Yes we were there yesterday! Thanks! I’m really happy with the setup. It allows me to have it ready to go if we decide last minute to make a run to the coast, and I can also carry plywood and long lumber for woodworking projects without needing to reconfigure anything.

It looked like you had rails on top of the RTT. Is that right? What weight would that support? I'm thinking kayak if it's level'ish with the cab.

Yes I specifically bought that hard shell Roofnest with the T tracks so I could use their crossbars (which are rated for 150 lbs). The original brackets that come with them were too tall to align with the Rivian crossbars over the cab, so I fabricated my own replacement brackets to lower the rear crossbars. https://roofnest.com/products/6-channel-crossbars
