Looks like it will be next year for us to get an R1S if we don't buy an used R1S launch edition.

Is it better to wait - is the Large Pack bigger than the launch edition pack? Is the Dual motor from Rivian going to be better?

What are the real differences and is it worth the wait?

No difference in battery size. Only tangible difference is being able to get launch green color.

Other changes include:
  • Free upgrade to off-road wheels
  • Wristband key (which kinda sucks)
  • Dash says Launch Edition instead of Adventurous Forever
  • For an R1S, you might be getting the poorer design for front-crashes. You should search for the specifics, but this was more about the build date (January 2023?)
  • Launch Edition R1S might have a louder compressor for the suspension. Ours is the newer one, so I can't compare, but the compressor in our LE R1T is very loud.
  • LE probably has more power outlets, specifically:
    • 12V in the Frunk (no guarantee, depends on build date)
    • 12V under the dash (no guarantee, depends on build date)
  • 2 magnets for the front trunk platform (has no effect on usability)
  • LE should have Meridian sound vs Rivian sound. This is a toss-up, I have one of each, and think they both sound great. Both are clearer than anything I've had in a vehicle before. The Rivian sound can be tweaked to have a louder bass.
I'm not sure if I'm missing anything, but this is what I can remember.

The battery pack is the same regardless. Launch edition is just as the name says. It’s a package. The other being the Adventure package. Both look identical outside and 99% identical inside expect for the badge on the ride side of the dash. The launch edition came with a few free upgrades vs the adventure package.

I personally have a LE R1S that was built in May of this year. It has the Rivian sounds system, the updated frontal crash driver pan area, and one magnet in the frunk. No 12v under dash or in the frunk.

Personally, I wouldn’t wait and just get one now. If you need a larger battery pack then wait for the MAX pack or get a dual motor configuration.

Dual motor will be slightly less expensive. Also, if you don't need the large pack standard will save some cost as well but still give 270mi range.

I could have ordered a Launch edition but chose not too. Didn't want to be part of that first run of vehicles. Very happy with my choice.

My launch edition was built in June, and so it has all the same pros and cons of the newer regular builds.

Just FYI, Rivian is still building Launch Editions as we type these responses. There are still many R1S early reservation holders who have not gotten their vehicles yet. So, until Rivian has completed fulfilling all those early orders, they will continue to build them in the same build pattern as every other R1S at the same time. My delivery specialist told me that could end sometime later this year or next year.

With one year less of warranty.
I wasn’t aware the warranty was different. That’s nice to know.

Yea, Rivian obviously didn’t highlight this difference.

Based on third-party extended warranty prices for EVs of this price range, an extra year of warranty is at least $1,500 value.

When I ordered it was “launch first”. If I would have known my non launch was coming alongside launch editions I may have grabbed one. I only would have saved in the tires.

True...and the battery and electric drive warranty is 150,000 vs 175,000 for the quad. This was huge in our calculations. We do a lot of driving... probably about 20k per yr.

If it increased to 25k per yr we would still be covered for battery and electric drive for 7 years.

I’ll be averaging about 36k miles a year. So the extra warranty coverage will really help.
