After more than 2 years, my R1S is finally almost here. Taking delivery next week.

R1S owners, please provide me with a checklist on what to inspect, check, ask questions about during the process. Considering my nearest service center is 90 miles away, won't be a quick fix for me if anything goes wrong.

Plus, I have a 6-50R outlet in my garage (used for my Tesla Model Y as well, bought adapter from Tesla). Is it safe to charge the R1S using a 6-50R outlet? Where can I get a safe adapter?

Can I use the Tesla adapter and charge using Tesla charging wire?

Any further comments are much appreciated!

This Thread has a few checklists. I’ll let others chime in on the adapter question - outside of my bailiwick

IMO don't get bogged down in neurotic checklists. Just eyeball things and enjoy it.

Change the 6-50 to a 14-50 outlet and your R1S should come with it's own mobile charge cable. No need for adapter.

To convert to a 14-50, I will have to rewire - correct?

I personally would install a hardwired EVSE with a 60 amp breaker for long term charging.

For right now you can use the Tesla charger you have with A2Z Stellar J-1772 adapter and manually turn down the amperage on the Rivian to around 40 amps or lower. You want to only use 80% of amperage for continuous load as long as your wire / breaker is up to spec.

If I was in your situation, I would order the Tesla AC to J-1772 adapter so you can use the Tesla charger you have while you figure out a hardwire solution @ 48 amps / 60 amps.

You can get both Tesla AC and DC chargers on a bundled sale from A2Z which would cover all your charging scenarios at home or on the go. The Stellar AC (home) Plug is normally $112 and Typhoon DCFC (Tesla fast charger) is $197. You can get both of them with the bundle discount and "RIV" coupon code for $252 with free shipping.

Tesla To J1772 | Up to 80A | 20kW | 12 Months Warranty

A2Z EV Link - NACS (Tesla® Supercharger & NACS 3RD PARTY DC CHARGERS) to CCS1 Adapter | 500A | 1000V

You would and depending on the distance from your panel, the 6/3 wire for the 14-50 could get expensive.

thank you, this is very helpful. to confirm, (spoiler - I am very bad with electrical specs _ i know i need to get better going forward owning 2 EVs lol).

My current charge on the Model Y tops at 32A. That should be fine for the Rivian as well - correct?

And the J1772 adapter, I can just plug it with the Tesla charger and should be fine for my home use? Can I use these at Tesla superchargers as well? or should I wait for the Rivian adapter?

Do not try to use the A2Z - Stellar Tesla AC to J-1772 adapter on the supercharger network. The Stellar adapter is for AC charging which is typically at home or destination Tesla chargers at hotel.

The A2Z Typhoon plug is the fast charging DCFC - to CCS adapter for Tesla Superchargers that are compatible and activated.

You can charge your Rivian at 32 amps without any issues. Just make sure your breaker / wiring is up to spec and you manually adjust the amperage under the charging tab on your Rivian. You might have to manually adjust it every time. That's why over the long run you probably want a proper hardwired EVSE that will run on a 60 AMP breaker and provide 48 amp continous.

32 amp charging will be slower and probably net you 16 miles per hour instead of 22 miles per hour - 24 miles per hour with 48 amp

First of all, congratulations, and enjoy your R1S! Second...when we picked up our R1S, the SC hadn't done a thorough-enough quality check. Within maybe 10 minutes of leaving the SC, we were adjusting the ride height, and the air suspension was making a very loud noise, which in hindsight was like air leaking out. Our very first reaction was a bit of dismay that this noise might be "normal". As it turns out, it wasn't, and within two weeks, our air suspension completely failed. Rivian promptly fixed it and all has been good since then, but if I were picking the car up over again, while in Park or Hold I would cycle through various Drive Modes and try to adjust the Ride Height to/from every position - Highest, High, Standard, Low and Lowest - just to make sure that it is working. You've probably read about the normal "clicking" sound you'll hear, but make sure there isn't a missing noise like air being let out of a balloon!

Congrats and welcome to the Rivian family. We have the R1T and we love it.

I know there are a ton of lists somewhere but this is what we looked for:

1. The paint is correct and no blemishes
2. No panel gaps
3. My wife got a complete lesson from the guide on the inner workings of the vehicle.....happy wife, happy life. Don't leave the SC without making sure you and anyone that will be driving the vehicle are familiar with everything.
4. The newest software was just updated and it is different than the previous versions. Make sure you take the time to ask questions about "How do I do <insert question>?". They allow 60 mins. of what they call the "ceremony", but take your time....you are buying the vehicle, not them.
5. Make sure you download the Rivian app to your phone before you get there....makes it easier to link the phone.
6. If you do experience issues a few weeks or months down the road, open a ticket. Depending on what it is that needs repair, it can be a month to 3 or 4.....DO NOT GET frustrated....it is what it is. But in that time, you can write down other things and add them to your ticket.

Don't get frustrated that if after you leave the lot you hear things, see things that you felt you should have seen......we can't see all. After we took delivery we have some issues and Rivian fixed them without issue. Another issue we had after about 3 months the pillar cover on the drivers side was falling off....the mobile tech fixed that when they delivered the spare tire.

But most of all, enjoy!....even if you find quirks about it. No vehicle is 100% and what isn't an issue today, might be an annoyance in a few months.

So thankful for all the insights provided. Been waiting for this since 2022, and I am all ready to start driving.

Will keep in the mind the tips and the checklist.
