During an interview on an off-road podcast, the owner of 74Weld talked about wanting to develop a portal for Rivian, but the interest hasn't been enough to move forward. He went as far as talking to Rivian about offering a factory install offer.

How amazing would it be to get a 3-inch lift and bigger tires without having to modify the suspension at all! Let's start showing some interest and letting 74Weld know they should produce them.

This is the Bronco version if you're interested in seeing them. https://motorsports.74weld.com/bronco-portal/

Most of these have to push the wheels much further out. I'd potentially be interested but not interested in being the first in line because of the unintended consequences that could happen with the quad motor setup and torque vectoring.

Also not sure how much room there really is left with the big brakes on the Rivians.

Good points, but I really want to see what can be done. I hope someone works it out so we can see how it works. I think this setup would be the best way to add a lift.

Oh for sure, not complicating anything about the suspension and pushing even the control arms up is great. I'd consider offering up my vehicle as a test bed if they were local, but the cost is way outside of what I'd be willing to commit to for my own use.

Out of my depth here, but it sounds like this would allow R1s to be re-geared lower. Wouldn't that help address the biggest issue that R1s have on rocks, which is getting a motor "unstuck" at low speed/high torque requirement situations?

Personally not in the market, but looks really cool nonetheless.

I don’t think lack of torque is the issue—is the lack of mechanical connection between drive motors and total reliance on traction control.

I think mechanical lockers would definitely help, but I think gearing plays a big role, too. I probably butchered the idea, but @Dirtcom_AJ explained it well:
"With the info we've gained from our simulated roller tests on how the Rivian reacts to "crawling and low traction situations there is definitely room for improvement. If it is true that the Electric Motors react the way they do to prevent overheating, then we cannot gain a "simulated" locker due to this fact and a software update won't do much for us. Punching the accelerator pedal will have to suffice for now.

If overheating prevention is the case, then higher gear ratios would be the only solution. Currently the Rivian is on a 12.6:1 gear ratio. To put this into perspective, the Honda Passport has a 20.39:1 gear ratio when locked in first gear. Very capable for its class of vehicle, but still not smooth at crawling. A true 4x4 would be in the 30 - 50:1 gear ratio. This gives a much higher resolution of control at slower speeds."

It's why the electric G-Wagon is supposedly going to have lockers AND a two speed gear box. Since we're not going to get lockers for the our R1s, I think playing around with gearing could be a way to gain certain performance.

20k to add 3 inches to a vehicle that already has 15” of ground clearance.
What kind of off-roading do you all do that you need more clearance? What we need like others have said already are lockers. Should probably be a couple of grand and much more useful.
That being said I’d like to see a R1S/T Square a la G-Klasse.
Yes, I left out the gearing on purpose as I don’t think that’s an issue.

No kidding. Here's hoping that the @DCE guys actually release their lift solution ?

Interesting concept. Even more interesting pricing at $20,000.

Usual price for portal axles really.
No disagreement, I've seen them on Geiser Bro's Trophy Trucks, which start at $600K+

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Awesome solution for off-road, but I would have reservations for something like this on-road where road manners would take a hit from the significant increase in unsprung mass, assuming no additional changes in suspension tuning.

I’d love to see it tried, and what their results were.

Edit: corrected “ass” to “mass” lol
